    Matthew 5:4 (NKJV)

4 Blessed are those who mourn, (weep)
    For they shall be comforted.

I think Jon was the last one to mention this that I can remember. It is part of what you said, but I think it is easy to miss, and even knowing it, you can still miss. So I will reiterate what you said:

"An encourager is able to stand beside someone else..."

Funny thing. When you are really hurting, there is something that always makes some part of you point at yourself. You don't like looking into other's eyes, and you just want to crawl away and hide/die. If someone gets in front of you, in your face, even though you may even deserve it, it doesn't help you avoid this response. If you see sorrow in another, this is not the thing to do, folks! Trust me, I've screwed up on this often enough...

A person beside you, willing to put their head even lower than yours, speaking in hushed tones (if at all) can do wonders, even if they have nothing more they can do than that. Even greater is one who can understand very much the pain you feel, and is willing to open that wound again for your sake.

We cannot all comfort each other in each situation here as well as another might. Indeed, there are times recently when I felt I was totally the wrong person for the job, despite the fact that I could feel their pain. I don't know completely that I am right or even wrong in this.

I think you are right that we will all have a part to play in this, some to a greater degree than others. Understand this: You will indeed open yourself up to feel their pain. Many of us, in the values of this world, could say "I've suffered enough" and I could not refute that. However, as Christ is my example, I am sure I can never suffer as greatly as he did for me, or you for tht matter. I think Christ would have you pick up that cross and follow after him if you saw it there. I'd like to think I at least try...

    In Christ,

    Mel

BTW, if you are in a wheelchair, and can't get your head lower than mine, don't think you can be of no comfort. You, by trying, with that awful reminder of your suffering/burden before me, are possibly capable of the greatest gift of comfort simply by making the effort!!!

    Hi Bro.Mel,
Thanks for visiting and leaving your wonderful input. The only way we can feel the deep hurt and pain of others, is because we have been there and we know what it is like..Even tho some has never been in this situation, we want to comfort them, the best we know how. I have heard some say, I don't know what to say to that person, that has lost a loved one. At times we don't need to say a word, just be there with them and and listen. What a great comfort, just to know someone is by you. We know there is no one like Jesus, He is always with us. God of all comfort.......

I know at times I read the post, and my comments may not be what the person expects. But I do my best. I'm not perfect, just forgiven......

God bless you now and always.....
    With God's Love,
    Lois

Hi Lois J. Wonderful post. Thanks for reminding us that God has given us His power and ability to comfort one another. Pointedly you note the underlying concept in facing any pain is not to seek to escape it, but to allow the Lord to work us through it to receive the greater gain.

    love
