When your back's against the wall, what do you do?

    WALKING BY FAITH

What does it look like to live by faith? When God promised the Israelites deliverance from Egypt, their hearts were humble and trusting: "...when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped." (Exodus 4:31b, NIV) Some of them may have thought the escape would be easy. "You're setting us free? Great!!! Let's go!"

A short time later, however, their attitudes changed...

Pharaoh denied their request to leave and punished them with a back-breaking workload, and many hearts turned from Moses, God's chosen deliverer: "May God look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.” (Exodus 5:21b) I'm sure many thought, "This is freedom? God isn't making sense here." Still enslaved, they were bitterly discouraged. But we know from exchanges between God and Moses that their rescue was already in motion. After a season of hardship, waiting, and fighting for freedom (via Moses and Aaron), they were not only released, but commanded to go! (Exodus 12:31-33)

Free at last!!! Or maybe not...

Realizing they were giving up a slave labor force of millions, the Egyptians pursued. Trapped by a seaside encampment with nowhere to go, the Israelites were terrified. They cried out to God, but blamed Moses. Completely forgetting God's promise of freedom, they sank into despair and unbelief: "It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than die in the desert!" (Exodus 14:12b)

Did they die though? No matter how afraid they were, or how certain they were of their doom, in the end God did what he said he would: He set them free. He gave them opportunity for a new life in a new land.

As we seek to grow in God and find freedom from the things that bind us, he necessarily leads us through difficult circumstances to get there. Satan throws his hat in the ring as well, trying to block our path to intimacy with God and fullness of life. There's great news though: we don't have to stay stuck. When our backs are up against a wall, God is faithful to provide a way through each difficulty we face.

The trick is to believe what he tells us. Believe it when he says, "Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled." (Matthew 5:6) You want change - to overcome sinful habits in your life? Walk faithfully with him - he'll grant your desire and empower you to do it. Believe that you can have a fulfilling life despite it problems (John 10:10).  Need to navigate conflict successfully? Seek his face and follow his direction - he'll see you safely to the other side without letting it pull you under.

He is truly good, and has good in store for us. "As for God, his way is perfect; The word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him." (Psalm 18:30) In the midst of your journey, trust in his promises - in him. Don't let the fear from difficulties and obstacles sideline you. It's way too easy to give up and stay "comfortably" imprisoned. Keep your eyes on truth. Just as we have confidence for the life to come, so for this life "We live by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:17)

What are you looking for... ?

    To Live is to Love

    Love...

Humanity is obsessed with it, and rightfully so - it's our deepest need and most fundamental reason for being.  It's so elusive at times, because we seek its complete fulfillment in all the wrong places. We think that if we find a soulmate, a great group of friends, a close family, a rich lifestyle with uninterrupted pleasure, and so on, we'll find love - perfectly and eternally. If we keep looking in the wrong places, life can be so disappointing... even depressing. "Hope deferred makes the heart sick." (Proverbs 13:12, NIV)

Our focus in life points inward as we engage in an endless quest to fill our greatest need. From the time we're born, so many voices - music and movies, professors and poets - tell us that we'll find love anywhere but in God. If I were to search a lifetime for great treasure, looking everywhere I was directed without ever finding it, I would be discouraged to say the least.
But love is a commodity worth far more than any wealth. It's what we're made for - our very purpose in life:

    To live is to love.

Jesus clearly taught us God's two greatest commands: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength, " and "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Mark 12:30-31)

When we love and are loved, we find fullness of life.

Who made us this way? God. The God who IS love - the perfect and only source of love itself. So, when we look to him for love, we find it. The search is over. Through a close relationship with Him, we discover the complete, eternal love we crave. He supplies some of this love through others, but here's the ironic thing: we tap most fully into others' love by giving love away.

To love is to be loved.

As I think back on the most valued relationships of my life, they've been ones where I was deeply loved as a result of deeply showing love, or because the other had this same Christ-given value of giving rather than getting.

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us." (1 John 4:7-12)

So what does it mean to love? In the next post, we'll dive into 1 Corinthians 13 and other Scriptures that tell us how to love.
