    Abyss

    The word of the day is:

    Abyss

    Luke 8:33

    [33] When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

       Why is it that Jesus sent the demons into the pigs instead of destroying them or sending them into the Abyss? The Abyss is another word for the place of confinement where Satan and his minions are. The reason Jesus did not send them there is because the time for this work had not come. He healed many people of the destructive effects of being possessed by demons but yet he didn’t destroy them. We can ask the same question today – why doesn’t Jesus stop all the evil in the world today? His time for this has still not yet come, but it definitely will. Revelations states that the future victory of Jesus over Satan, his demons, and all evil will come. Jesus has already won and this is great news!

    Challenge;

       Like so many challenges before, this one is interesting. Whenever you feel like you’re being attacked, stepped on, condemned for your beliefs, or unworthy of being a child of God, etc…. Remember that it is the Abyss, or Satan’s realm that is trying to pull you down. The battles rages on and are you going to be victorious with Jesus, or will you fall into the Abyss where they are always trying to take you? Life with Jesus is not always easy, but I know I can’t wait till the day Jesus returns to vanquish all evil from this place.

    Potential

    The word of the day is:

    Potential

    Genesis 50:26

    [26] So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

       Genesis is the book that gives us many rich descriptions of the lives of many great men and women who walked with God. They sometimes succeeded and often failed yet they taught us so much. By reading about these lives it helps us to see what to do and what not to do. This way we can choose which path to follow. Where did they get their courage and motivation? By realizing that despite their inadequacies God was still there. Just realizing this and knowing He is with us should encourage us to remain faithful to Him. To rely on Him for guidance, strength and the potential to be what He says we can be.

    Challenge;

       Take the plunge and realize that God has you in His strong arms. Take that leap of faith and find whatever potential He has for you. He gives us the potential to help one another, bring believers to Him, etc… Use your potential to glorify the Lord.

    Sleep

    The word of the day is:

    Sleep

    Psalm 3:5

       [5] I lie down and sleep;

          I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

       Sleep does not come easily during a crisis. David could have had many sleepless nights over the fact that his son Absalom was rebelling against him and gathered an army to kill him. David actually slept soundly and peacefully. What made that difference, what made him able to sleep even though his own son was trying to kill him? David did as he would most of the time, he cried out to God and God heard those cries. David was assured that God would hear his prayers which gave him that “peace beyond all understanding.” It is much easier to get a good night’s rest when you have that assurance that God is in control of your circumstances.

    Challenge;

       If you are lying awake at night over something that is beyond your control, pour your heart out to God and thank Him for the control He has over your life. You will find that sleep will come. Say to Him, “God, you have a problem.” Let Him take your worries and fears away that you may have and have Him replace it with peace, assurance, and hope. Wake up the next morning and praise the Father for the great night’s sleep.

    Intentions

    The word of the day is:

    Intentions

    Matthew 21:30

       [30] "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go.

       The son who said that he would obey but did not go was the representation of the nation of Israel in Jesus’ day. They spoke of doing God’s will in their life and then disobeyed. They were being phony, just going through the motions. It is dangerous to pretend to obey God when all our hearts are far from God. God knows our true intentions. Our actions must match our words.

    Challenge;

       Obey God with all you heart, mind, body and soul. Make sure your words match your actions. Good intentions are great when our actions say what our mouths are speaking.

    Freedom

    The word of the day is;

    Freedom (2)

    Romans 5:20

    [20] The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,

       When a sinner, not with God, it seems like being in a pit trying to climb out to see the promises that He has for us. It seems almost like falling every two or three feet we climb out. We fall back into sin, or the pit. Maybe the pit you’ve dug seems way to deep to get out. Either way, isn’t it a great feeling to know that Jesus is there to reach in and give you His hand so that you may climb out to reach God the Father? When he does reach in and pull you out, then you have the freedom to obey, not out of necessity or your own power, but out of the power of God and His love. You know that if you stumble, Jesus is right there to catch you before you fall back into that pit, if you simply just let Him.

    Challenge;

       Let’s understand one thing; everyone has a choice or freedom to follow Jesus or not.  Remember that with our freedom comes a great responsibility, to obey God’s laws. We have our freedom to choose Him or ourselves. Choose wisely, because this is the most important decision you will ever make.

    Superiority

    The word of the day is:

    Superiority

    1 Corinthians 11:9-11

    [9] neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. [10] For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.

     [11] In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.

       God created man and woman; He also created lines of authority so as to help the world function smoothly. Even though God created these lines of authority, even in marriage, there should not be lines of superiority. God made men and women to offset each other, to complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. One sex is not better than the other. The authority and submission that God commands must not become a wedge in the oneness in marriage. We must use our individual and unique gifts to strengthen our marriages and to glorify God.

    Challenge;

       Sit down with your spouse and discuss your relationship. Remember that as we become one in marriage that also we need to communicate to one another. If the nerves in your hand do not send a signal to your brain when it’s on a hot stove, you will burn it beyond repair. It’s the same in marriage, if one is superior to the other, than they don’t communicate and then what happens? Reevaluate your relationship and repair what needs to be repaired.

    Incense

    The word of the day is:

    Incense

    Matthew 2:11

          [11] On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

       These gifts were given by the Magi because they knew they were presenting gifts to a future king. The gold is a gift worthy for any king, the incense was a gift for deity, and myrrh was a spice for a person that was going to die. These were the symbols that Jesus was the coming Messiah. The gifts were also probably a source of financial aid to get them to Egypt and back.

    Challenge;

       The challenge is not to go after incense and buy it but to recognize how the wise men saw an infant as a king, a deity, and a person that was going to die. Maybe we can treat our family, friends, neighbors, and strangers as if they were worthy of these gifts. Recognize everyone as worthy to receive your attention and love no matter who they are. They are creations of God.

    Works

    The word of the day is:

    Works

    Luke 3:8-9 (New International Version)

    [8] Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. [9]The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."

       Confessions of sin and a changed life go hand in hand, they are inseparable. Faith without deeds is dead. Jesus’ harshest words were to the religious leaders who thought that they were better than anyone else but for themselves did not desire real change. They wanted to be the ones in charge with authority but would not change their hearts and minds. Their lives did not produce any fruit because there was a lack of works, or good deeds. Repentance must be followed by action or it isn’t real. Following Jesus isn’t saying the right words it is doing everything like Jesus would.

    Challenge;

       Make sure that you are not just doing lip service, but make sure that you are following Jesus’ lead by example. Do everything today that Jesus would. Would he talk bad about a co-worker to others, complain about someone rushing to get in front of the line? Would Jesus himself call anyone names other than their own? Would He say harsh words to His spouse or children?

       Do as Jesus would and follow His example. Produce good fruit so that you are not cut down and thrown into the fire. Examine your life and change whatever needs to be changed and do it today!

    Belief

    The word of the day is:

    Belief (2)

    2 Kings 5:12

       [12] “Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.

       Because the cure for Naaman’s disease seemed too simple, he left in a rage. He was a hero and expected some miraculous and spectacular cure. His ego was full of pride and self-will, which made it hard for him to expect a cure simply through faith alone. Sometimes people react to God’s offer of forgiveness in the same way. Just believing in Jesus doesn’t seem powerful or significant enough to sustain eternal life. To obey God and His commands doesn’t seem heroic. What Naaman needed to do about his leprosy is the same thing we need to do about our sins – humbly accept God’s mercy. Don’t ever let the reaction or today’s society gauge how your faith can cure you if you just simply believe.

    Challenge;

       Where ever you are at today, train yourself to believe in Jesus. If you do or claim to, do it even more. Allow God into more areas of your life and allow Him to bless you. Don’t get caught up into thinking that when you claim to believe and you ask God for forgiveness, that a huge booming voice will come over that hidden loudspeaker and say “YOU’RE FORGIVEN!” It doesn’t work that way. Just simply believe and He will simply forgive.

    Fairness

    The word of the day is:

    Fairness

    Genesis 18:21

       [21] “…that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

       God gave the men of Sodom a fair test.  He wasn’t blind to how wicked they were,  but out of love, patience, and fairness He gave them one more chance to make the right choice to repent. God still waits patiently with love and fairness for you and I to make the right choice to repent and turn to Him. If you want to be a wise man or woman, turn to Him before it is too late and His patience wears out.

    Challenge;

       Don’t wait until the patience wears out. Don’t be caught in the dark. Today, repent and turn to God and don’t turn away. He will bless you in so many ways. His fairness seems unfair, because how many times do we not wait patiently for someone in our lives to make the right choices?

    Inspiration

    The word of the day is:

    Inspiration

    2 Timothy 3:16

       [16] All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness

       The Bible is not a compiled book of stories, myths, fables or mere human ideas on God. It is definitely not a human book written by famous fictional authors. It is written by people driven or inspired by the Holy Spirit. God reveals who He is in the pages from certain people He instructed on how and what to right. This would be called inspiration.  The writers wrote from their own personal, historical, and cultural contexts. Even though they used their own minds, talents, language, and style, they wrote what God inspired them to write. Scripture is completely trustworthy because God was in control of who wrote it and what it said.

    Challenge;

       Whenever you get the inspiration to write anything the good Lord intends for you to right down, just do it. Allow God to enter your mind, heart, body and soul. See what He might inspire you to say, write, do, serve, encourage, love, greet, teach, etc… The trick is to be obedient enough to allow the Holy Spirit to inspire everything you do.

    Commitment

    The word of the day is:

    Commitment (2)

    Psalm 61:8

       [8] Then will I ever sing praise to your name

             and fulfill my vows day after day.

       David made a commitment, a vow to praise God each and every day. David praised God during both the good and the bad times in his life. Do you find something to praise God for each day? As you do, you will find your heart elevated from daily distractions to lasting confidence.

    Challenge;

       Make a vow to praise God every day, starting now. Find something to praise Him for including the bad times. There is always something there, are you tough enough to find it? As you commit to Him, He will commit to you.

    Gate

    The word of the day is:

    Gate

    Matthew 7:13-14

    [13] "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. [14] But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

       The gate to eternal life is called narrow but it does not mean that it is difficult to become a Christian. It just means that there is only one way to live with God and that very few people will walk that path or even chose Him. Jesus died for our sins in order to make us right before God, therefore believing in Him is our only way to eternal life. Too live His way is not easy, not always popular, but is the true way. Praise God that there is only one way to Him!

    Challenge;

       Make a choice today to walk that narrow path to the narrow gate. Risk ridicule and persecution to be a part of something that is bigger than all of us, yet it is obtainable. It is called “eternal life” with Him and I only hope that I can hear the Father at the narrow gate exclaim, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”

    Divinity

    The word of the day is:

    Divinity

    Luke 5:21

       [21] The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

       When Jesus told the paralyzed man that his sins were forgiven, the Jewish leaders accused Him of blasphemy. Blasphemy is claiming to be God or do what God can only do. This Jewish law was punishable by death and when they exclaimed Jesus blasphemous for forgiving the man of his sins, the religious leaders showed that they did not understand that Jesus is God. He has the power to heal both the body and the soul. Forgiveness of sins was a sign that the Messianic age had come.

    Challenge;

       In this day and age people have forgotten that Jesus is in everything we do. How do we know that the man standing on the street corner or the executive of some law firm or the successful business woman or the battered housewife is not Jesus? Do we really know if HE might be visiting us? When will He return? The challenge is today treat everyone as if they are Jesus. The most valuable person on earth who happens to be also the most humble. You and I don’t know when He might show up, so are we going to be believers and family members, or are we going to be Pharisees and doubters? Try this challenge and I bet Jesus will show up in some way.

    Business

    The word of the day is:

    Business

    Proverbs 16:11

     11 Honest scales and balances are from the LORD;
           all the weights in the bag are of his making.

       We know what it is to be honest or dishonest in business. It doesn’t matter whether we buy, sell, make or offer a product or service. Sometimes we feel we need to be a little bit dishonest to gain in our profits or advance our careers. But if we want to obey God, there is no in between. God demands His family to be honest in any business function. While it’s hard to be honest in every transaction, we are still called to do so. You simply cannot rationalize dishonest gain in business because it is disobedient to God. Ask Him what to do when issues arise that makes it hard to be honest and fair.

    Challenge;

       No matter what job we have, we are called to be honest and fair. Refuse to lie to gain ground. Most people, even non-Christians, appreciate the truth over lying. Try it, you may find out how much God will bless you for it.

    Profits

    The word of the day is:

    Profits

    Acts 19:25-27

       [25] He called them together, along with the workmen in related trades, and said: "Men, you know we receive a good income from this business.[26] And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all. [27] There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited, and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty."

       Demetrius and his colleagues did not argue with Paul’s doctrine that he preached in Ephesus, they were angered because his preaching threatened their profits. They made silver statues of the Ephesian goddess Artemis. They knew that if Paul continued to preach about this one true God, that nobody would want to buy their silver idol statues again. This would wreck their livelihood, cause it to suffer.

    Challenge;

       What do you profit from? Where does your livelihood stem from? Is it God driven or idol driven? Idols can come in many deceitful colors such as; trophies, cars, houses, spouses, collectables, etc…

       Don’t get me wrong, but if you take an inventory of what you idolize above God, you might surprise yourself. I remember a time where I really loved a car. My girlfriend at that time called up and said she was in an accident when she was driving it. What was my reaction? – Is the CAR ok? If I was truly following God and idolizing Him only my reaction should have been; Are YOU ok? Now do you see? So today’s challenge is to take an inventory of what you may have that might interfere with God in your life. It is better to do without those things that divert your attention from God than live without Him at the forefront.

    Purity

    The word of the day is:

    Purity

    Psalm 119:9

       [9] How can a young man keep his way pure?

          By living according to your word.

       Everywhere, we find temptations. In what we read, what we watch, what we listen to, it’s all there and coming at us at all times. We are drowning in this sea of impurity and it seems the only lifesaver to keep us afloat, is God’s word. The psalmist here is asking the same question that everyone asks; “How can a young man keep his way pure?” How about, how can we stay pure in an impure world, with the filthy environments that surround us? Where does the strength to stay pure come from? From God’s word, that’s where. The more we read, the stronger we become. We also must stay true to the word of God in order to become strong. Don’t just read it, live it.

    Challenge;

       Read the Bible today in your spare time. If you don’t have time, make time. Whatever God puts on your heart to read, apply it to your life. Look for some way that it relates to any of your situations right now.  You will be amazed at what God shows you and if you let him, He will guide you on a journey of a life time. See if the word doesn’t change you in some way toward purity.

    Consistency

    The word of the day is:

    Consistency

    Ruth 2:10-12

       [10] At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me – a foreigner?” [11] Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband – how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. [12] May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

       In her life, Ruth exhibited many great qualities; she was hard working, loving, kind, faithful, and brave. These qualities gave her a good reputation, but only because she was consistent in all these areas in all her life. Whatever Ruth did or wherever she went, her character remained the same.

       Your reputation is formed by the people who watch you wherever you go. At work, in church, at home, even in town, wherever you are seen consistently, you need to be consistently living out the qualities you possess.

    Challenge;

       My challenge to you is to live out your lives, consistently living out the qualities that you have gleaned from the Bible and the gifts God has given you. Consistently show your beliefs in the same way no matter what situation. I have an area God brought on my heart, a rule of the book of Moses. Unfortunately, I made my spouse angry at me because I would not be happy for the person who broke the rule. Our children, when they break the law, especially Gods law, we can be a forgiving person, but you cannot just say, “Oh that’s OK.” or “You didn’t mean it.” First off, it is not OK. Is it alright to break a little of today’s laws? “It was just a little bit of rape” or “It was only a little bit of murder.”

       Consistency, especially in front of your children, will build character and the people around you will know what to expect. No wishy washy, push over, bend the rules a little type decision making anymore. Commit yourselves to being consistent in God’s Word and truths.

    Loneliness

    The word of the day is:

    Loneliness

    Mark 4:30-32

       [30] Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? [31]It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. [32]Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade."

       Jesus used the parable of the mustard seed to describe that Christianity will start small yet grow into a worldwide network of believers. When you feel the loneliness of standing in your faith or belief, remember the realization that God is building a worldwide kingdom. You may be one of the lonely outposts on the fringe, but you are extremely important and you are not alone. Your faith, no matter how small, can be a part of a much larger scale of things in God’s kingdom and is greatly needed.

    Challenge;

       Remember that you are not alone. If you feel alone in your walk, shake the dust off your feet, get up and get plugged into the God Network! When you come to the church, you are part of a much bigger family. A big family that you cannot even fathom. Feeling alone? Pick up the phone and call one of your brothers or sisters in Christ.

    Knowledge

    The word of the day is:

    Knowledge

    1 Samuel 28:3-8

      [ 3] Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.

     [4] The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all the Israelites and set up camp at Gilboa. [5] When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. [6] He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. [7] Saul then said to his attendants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her."
          "There is one in Endor," they said.

     [8] So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. "Consult a spirit for me," he said, "and bring up for me the one I name."

       Saul was the one who banned all the mediums and spiritists, the ones who consult the dead, and then turned to one in desperation for counsel. Even though he removed the sin of witchcraft from the land, he kept a piece of it for his heart. Whether knowingly or not, he needed to release it not only from around Israel, but to take it from their minds and hearts. People still today make a great showing of getting rid of the sin in their lives, but they do not change their hearts or behaviors. If they don’t change their hearts, the door is wide open to let the sin back in. Knowing what is right and condemning what is wrong does not take the place of doing what is right.

    Challenge;

       Make sure your choices today is doing right. Don’t artificially cast aside anything wrong; erase it from your heart. If you decide to “get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives” (James 1:21), don’t hang on to gossip magazines, zodiac stuff, or even tarot cards. They will allow that sin to creep back in. If you have trouble with alcoholism, are you going to keep a bottle of booze around? It’s time to clean your closets out and do the right thing.

    Quit

    The word of the day is:

    Quit

    Matthew 9:22

       [22] Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.

       This woman was considered an untouchable for years. She was as “unclean” as a leper to that day’s society. She had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She didn’t quit, she never gave up. Jesus came and because of her faith in Him she was instantly healed! Sometimes in our lives we are tempted to give up on a person or situation that could be painful or uncomfortable. Jesus is the way and we should never quit Him or quit on Him because he will never give up on us.

    Challenge;

       Easy, don’t quit. Do not turn your back on God, a spouse, a child, a difficult person in your life, a co-worker, a friend, a stranger. If you are called to help with that person, do it. I have to admit that I’m one of those people that did quit. I left a marriage because it was too hard to deal with. There is more to the story, but the fact is I gave up. I wasn’t on this journey with Jesus and didn’t really know any better. We are called to something better than that and need to remember who is on our side. Don’t quit taking the path to Jesus because He will NEVER give up on you!

       By the way, He did forgive me and has blessed me with knowing He is there with me now.

    Matthew 8:11-12

       [11] I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. [12] But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

       “The east and the west” actually stand for the four corners of the earth. Everyone that is faithful to God will be brought together to have a feast with the Messiah. The Jews should have known that when the Messiah came, His blessings would be for everyone including the Gentiles. Unfortunately this message came as a shock to the Jews because they were too wrapped up in their own affairs. When we claim God’s promises, we need to be careful not to make them so personally that we forget to see what God wants us to do to reach all the people of the earth.

    Challenge;

       I tell you what, I want to be at that feast! Today, recognize your Messiah. Make certain that your path aligns itself with God’s word on who the Messiah is. It is not you, or someone else, or your car, or home, or property. I don’t want to be thrown outside into darkness, I want to eat with Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior and the true Messiah. Don’t substitute Jesus with something you shouldn’t be idolizing.

    Silence

    The word of the day is:

    Silence

    Psalm 46:10

       [10] "Be still, and know that I am God;
           I will be exalted among the nations,
           I will be exalted in the earth."

       War and destruction, we cannot hide from. It will come, but God will have the final victory. When that happens, we will all have to stand quietly before Him to be judged. Why shouldn’t we do it now? Why don’t we be still and quiet, honoring Him and His power and majesty?  We need to take time each day to silently exalt God and bask in His wisdom.

    Challenge;

       Find time today, right now if you need to, and give Him what He deserves, our silent obedience to Him. Let His wisdom wash over you and take you to places you never dreamed you could reach. It’s true, you can’t reach the places He wants you to go. Only He can take you there.

    Brothers

    The word of the day is:

    Brothers

    1 Corinthians 1:10

       [10] I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

       Paul is saying that we are all part of God’s family. This is why he calls us brothers. Believers share unity in Christ that runs even deeper than blood brothers and sisters.

    Challenge;

       Be kind to your brothers and sisters in Christ. When one is down, pick him up. When they have had an extraordinary day, praise God with them. We are all a part of one big family and should be mindful and loving and caring to our siblings of Christ. Let a brother or sister know how much you care today.
