Just Who Does Joan Rivers Think She Is?

I was shocked and appalled that, even someone as crass, although I once thought intelligent, as Joan Rivers would even make this statement about another human being. - _________________________________

JOAN RIVERS:  MEL GIBSON SHOULD DIE

Comedienne Joan Rivers says Mel Gibson deserves death for the anti-Semitic remarks he made during his July drunk driving arrest.
"He is an anti-Semitic son of a (expletive). He should (expletive) die!” she declared during an interview with Celebrity Week.

About Gibson’s interview with Diane Sawyer of "Good Morning America,” which aired this week, Rivers said: "The hypocrisy is what I hate. You know it’s all about ratings and Diane Sawyer has them all when she’s married to a Jewish guy, Mike Nichols.

It’s ridiculous because she’ll get great ratings and [Gibson] will be back in business.”

Rivers, who was promoting her upcoming Bravo special, "Joan Rivers: Before Melissa Pulls the Plug,” also said she’s added a few Mel Gibson jokes to her stand-up routine, including: "His bumper sticker is ‘My other car is a gas chamber.’”

    ______________________________________________________________

As is usually necessary, let me go ahead and state from the outset that I certainly do not approve of or condone Mel Gibson's actions and behavior in regard to his incident with the law in July.  However, I hardly think that what he did or said was not even remotely worthy of death.

I pray for him and his family and pray that this very gifted and talented individual finds his deliverance.  Rehab is good, programs have their place, but there is no program that is going to give Mel Gibson, Joan Rivers or anyone else for that matter, the kind of help we so desperately need outside of the deliverance that Jesus Christ offers.

My friend, there is one thing - and only one thing - that can deal with the sin problem, and that is -THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST!  And that also goes for Joan Rivers.

Now, with that said, I want to digress for a bit.  As shocking and uncalled for as Mel's statements were, he was intoxicated at the time.  Now some may think that is just an excuse, and a weak one at that, in which I concur.  However, what is even more shocking and appalling to me is that Joan Rivers made her statement, as far as I know, while stone sober.  Yet, no one rises up to call her down for it, no one demands that she apologize, ask forgiveness or get help or re-hab!  Is there not something wrong with this picture?

As a matter-of-fact, Joan Rivers has been known for years to criticize, blast, roast and derogatorily character assassinate a number of people, some in the name of humor, and yet, no red flags have ever gone up.  She is concerned about Gibson being "back in business", but I'm concerned as to why she is still in business herself!

Of course, perhaps it's all that plastic from all those surgeries that must have leaked over into Ms. Rivers's brain, so that maybe she isn't responsible for her statements... yes, yes I am sure that must be the logical explanation for the fiery, poisonous tongue of this otherwise, talented woman.

Seriously, what is it about celebrity status that makes someone think that they can play or replace God?  Why is there so much foolishness and, in some cases, down-right insanity that accompanies being a celebrity.

There’s a lesson that we all can learn and the vast majority of those with celebrity status could and should take particular note.  That lesson we find in the Word of God when Samuel had some words of rebuke for King Saul, who had allowed pride to infiltrate his life.

When Saul became disobedient to God, the prophet Samuel spoke pointed reminder in 1 Samuel 15:17:  “And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel?” Saul had blatantly disobeyed and rebelled against God and here Samuel gave the real reason for Saul's disobedience:  he had become proud, exalted, and independent of God—so large in his own eyes that he could reject even God's authority and act on his own.

Is that the kind of spirit that many, celebrity and non-celebrity alike, find themselves influenced or even possessed by?  All of us should take a regular inventory of our spiritual, as well as, our emotional condition.

Samuel began closing his conversation with Saul with this scathing rebuke in 1 Samuel 15:23:  “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.”  Crushing words to King Saul, but he had reached a point where they were also the words of an irreversible prophecy.  He would ultimately loose the kingdom that he was assigned over.

Whether it’s the position of a king or queen, a president, a rock or country star, or any other position of power or celebrity, we must understand that position can be changed or lost in a matter of a few seconds.  We also need to understand that God allows us, many times, to be placed in such positions to see if we are going to steward it wisely and use it for good and ultimately for His Kingdom’s sake.

Jesus said in Luke 12:48 “… unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.”

Mark it down, our little “kingdom”, whatever it may consist of, can also be taken away.  That goes for Joan Rivers, as well.  So now, let me pose this same question to you:  Just who do you think you are?

Christian Educators Offer Helpful Internet Tutorial Guide for Parents, Families
(AgapePress) - Two educators with a Christian school in Solana Beach, California, have put together an instruction DVD to help parents guard their families from the potential harm found on the Internet.
"The Internet and Your Kids: Healthy Habits for a Safe Online Home" is a step-by-step instructional presentation that provides "strategies for parents desiring a safe online home for their children," says Brian Dixon. The DVD allows parents to learn helpful tips for Internet users. Julie Dixon says the video disc "is packed with screenshot tutorials, student and parent interviews, and straightforward advice."
As teachers, Brian and Julie Dixon are actively involved with instructing children throughout their weekday routine. They know about the harm that can be found on the Internet. In their DVD they provide specific instructions on how to deal with such items as MySpace.com, instant messaging (IM), setting passwords, filtering software, file sharing, and computer location. Court Says Tithing Not an Option for the Bankrupt
1998 law let bankrupt give, but judge says 2005 bankruptcy reform law "closes the door."
When the collection plate goes around at weekly services, America's charitable but bankrupt worshippers must now abstain. A federal judge has reluctantly ordered debtors to repay their credit-card bills first.
Judge Robert E. Littlefield Jr. of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York has ruled that charitable or religious contributions are no longer considered a necessary living expense for those filing Chapter 13 bankruptcy.
"This change effectively closes the door for debtors who are above the median income from deducting charitable contributions as an expense," Littlefield wrote in his Aug. 28 opinion.
The judge was interpreting a law that went into effect last October which, in effect, deems "tithing" acceptable only in very limited circumstances, such as for ministers who must donate as part of their contract.
Littlefield said the 2005 law trumps the Religious Liberty and Charitable Donation Protection Act, signed in 1998 by President Clinton, which allowed tithing under the bankruptcy code.
More than 2 million Americans filed for bankruptcy protection in 2005 and hundreds of thousands are expected to do the same by the end of 2006, according to the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.
Henry Sommer, president of the group, said the legislation favors the credit industry at the expense of religious liberty.

Paul, Women and Religious Chauvinism in America
Last month a Baptist church in New York stopped a woman from teaching Sunday school because men were in her class. What would the apostle Paul say about this?

I don't know Mary Lambert, but I can't help feeling sorry for her. After serving as a Sunday school teacher for 54 years at First Baptist Church of Watertown, N.Y., the 81-year-old woman was dismissed last month by her pastor. Wham! Just like that she was out the door.

The pastor and other leaders of the church said they took this drastic action because the Bible directed them to do so. In their opinion, the apostle Paul believed women should never teach men or hold positions of church authority.

“The apostle Paul believed the gifts of the Holy Spirit are distributed to people regardless of race, class or gender.”

Pastor Timothy LaBouf told reporters that he based his decision on 1 Timothy 2:12, which states in the King James Bible: “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.”

Lambert’s story is odd, to be sure. After all, why did the church wait 54 years to enforce their strict doctrinal view? And why did everyone in the church go along with Lambert’s ouster? Read more here...
    Lives of Quiet Turbulence
For her master's thesis in divinity school, Elizabeth Marquardt wrote a paper called "The Moral and Spiritual Experiences of Children of Divorce." At the time, she found almost no data on the topic. "No one had looked," she says, "at how divorce in childhood shapes how children approach the biggest questions of all: Who am I? Where do I belong? What is right and wrong? What is true? Is there a God?"
She suspected, based on her own experience as a child of divorce, that divorce shapes how children answer these questions. So, in a project based at the Institute for American Values, she and Norval Glenn set out to learn more about adults whose parents had parted ways.
The result was a four-year, nationally representative survey of 1,500 young adults between 18 and 35, members of the first generation to grow up with widespread divorce. Senior associate editor Agnieszka Tennant looked up Marquardt recently to chat about her findings published in Between Two Worlds: The Inner Lives of Children of Divorce (Crown, 2005). Wesleyan Holiness Consortium is Created
Dallas, TX – Top leaders from eight denominations met for a one day gathering to discuss the need for a coordinated and unified effort among them surrounding their common heritage and commitment to the Holiness message. The outcome of the gathering was the creation of the Wesleyan Holiness Consortium. The Consortium will be working cooperatively to multiply efforts already started and piloted in the Southern California area among these churches over the past three years.
Denominations participating in this first meeting included the Church of the Nazarene, Brethren in Christ, Church of God in Christ, Free Methodist, Salvation Army, Christian & Missionary Alliance, Church of God (Anderson), and Wesleyan. Others who expressed desire to participate but whose leaders were unable to attend included the International Pentecostal Holiness, Foursquare, Shield of Faith, and Worldwide Church of God.
Over the past three years these denominations have funded and cooperated in the Wesleyan Holiness Study Project, a gathering of 30-40 scholar/leaders who recently released the result of their work in the Holiness Manifesto. A book is forthcoming that captures the work of the Project in more comprehensive writing as a tool for pastors and lay leaders. The Manifesto has already been used in these various denominations as a training tool and convening document to call the pastors to a heightened commitment to the message of Holiness in the 21st Century.
The formation of the Wesleyan Holiness Consortium takes the effort to a new level of cooperation. In its formative meeting the leaders committed to plan and conduct three efforts in the coming 12 months:
    1. The Wesleyan Holiness Study Project will continue as a means to provide ongoing theological dialogue among the churches regarding the message of holiness;
    2. A Wesleyan Holiness Young Leaders Hangout in August of 2007, in Dallas to glean input and engagement of the young generation of leaders in carrying the holiness message forward in the new century;
    3. A Wesleyan Holiness Pastors’ Day will be developed in a second city to replicate the already successful Pastors’ Day conducted in Southern California over the two previous years.
By these three projects the Wesleyan Holiness Consortium hopes to expand the growing interest in relevant articulation of the holiness message to other regions. These particular emphases are designed to keep the deep theological dialogue connected to the practical application through leaders and local churches.
The Wesleyan Holiness Consortium Leaders will be meeting again on September 14, 2007 to review the effect of their efforts and to consider the next steps together. For further information contact: Kevin W. Mannoia, Azusa Pacific University, x3243. kmannoia@apu.edu

    Ms. Magazine Celebrates Abortions
(EP)--Ms. Magazine is making a blatant pro-abort political statement with an Oct. 10 cover story titled “We Had Abortions.”
Last summer the magazine published a petition on its Web site seeking women who would sign their names as having had an abortion -- what Ms. called “a very common, necessary and important procedure for millions of women.”
The petition asked women to place a check mark next to this statement: “I have had an abortion. I publicly join the millions of women in the United States who have had an abortion in demanding a repeal of laws that restrict women’s reproductive freedom.”
The magazine is publishing the names of more than a thousand women who signed the statement. In addition, the petition will be sent to legislative bodies as well as to the White House.
The campaign is in part a response to the Silent No More campaign, which has collected affidavits of women who have had abortions and now regret them.
Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, senior fellow of the Beverly LaHaye Institute, the think tank for Concerned Women for America, called the pro-abortion campaign “an embarrassment for civilized and caring human beings.”
“The pride behind the ‘We Had Abortions’ campaign is totally inconsistent with, and puts the lie to, the fatuous claim frequently bandied about during election campaigns by the Left that they too want to make abortions rare,” she said. “The desperation of the pro-abortion activists is turning into a sorry spectacle which will surely backfire as the American public sees the crass motivation behind the abortion movement.”
This is not the first time the magazine -- founded by feminist Gloria Steinem -- has asked women to reveal their abortions. In the 1972 debut issue, 53 well-known women allowed the magazine to list their names, even though abortion on demand was not mandated by the U.S. Supreme Court until the following year.
“Obviously, with nearly 50,000,000 abortions since the courts imposed abortion on the U.S., there are thousands of women who could sign such a petition,” Crouse said. “Many women who have had an abortion, though, are not comfortable with their decision, and thousands deeply regret their abortion.
“Certainly even most women who believe that abortion is acceptable would not celebrate such a drastic action.” Evangelical Press News Service.
National Academies of Science: Abortion Linked to Subsequent Premature Birth / Link Supports Abortion as Risk Factor for Breast Cancer
MEDIA ADVISORY /Christian Newswire/ -- A preliminary report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), an organization of the National Academies of Science, lists "first trimester abortion" among the risk factors for premature birth. [1]
The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer notes the publication of a paper this month by an IOM committee entitled, "Preterm Birth: Causes, Consequences, and Prevention." [2]
The report has huge public policy implications. Premature birth is associated with cerebral palsy for the child and breast cancer for the mother.
The IOM reported that premature births before 37 weeks gestation represent 12.5 percent of all U.S. births, a 30% increase since 1981. Abortion became legally accessible in 1973. The IOM said premature birth cost U.S. society $26.2 billion in 2005.
Recently, U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, an abortion enthusiast, and other Democrats from the House Government Reform Committee issued a report attacking crisis pregnancy centers for informing women about the risks of abortion, including breast cancer, infertility and emotional harm. [3]
The IOM's findings provide further support for an abortion-breast cancer link.
If, after having had an abortion, a childless woman is unable to carry subsequent pregnancies, then she could remain childless for the remainder of her life. Cancer organizations say childlessness (nulliparity) is a risk factor for breast cancer.
Other research shows that a premature birth before 32 weeks gestation increases the mother's breast cancer risk. [4,5] The biological reasons for this are the same as for the abortion-cancer link.
Breast tissue is only matured from cancer-susceptible tissue into cancer resistant tissue during the last eight weeks of a full-term pregnancy. [6] During this time, women receive protection from estrogen overexposure experienced during the first two trimesters of pregnancy.
The World Health Organization provided additional support for an abortion-cancer link last year when it identified combined (estrogen plus progestin) oral contraceptives (OCs) and combined hormone replacement therapy as "Group 1 carcinogens." [7,8]
Abortion has a disparate impact on adolescents. Using OCs and/or having an abortion before the birth of a first child are especially carcinogenic. [6] Teenagers who have abortions have a greater risk for subsequent premature births than do adults because of the higher risk of infection and weakened cervix. [9,10,11,12]
Malcolm Potts, former medical adviser for the International Planned Parenthood Federation, acknowledged in 1967 that abortion has a disparate impact on teenagers' risk of premature birth. [16]
At least sixty significant studies published since 1963 report an abortion-premature birth link. [13,14]
The abortion-premature birth link is a double-edged sword for doctors. Abortion doctors may be sued for causing cerebral palsy, but non-abortion-performing obstetricians can use the IOM's report to defend themselves against cerebral palsy lawsuits. An Australian court decided in 2004 that Dr. Alan Kaye was not responsible for Kristy Bruce's cerebral palsy because her mother had had an abortion shortly before she became pregnant with Kristy. [15]
Communist Hungary restricted abortions in 1976 after recognizing that post-abortive women have more premature births. [17]
U.S. public policymakers must protect the health of women and children by requiring doctors to inform women of the risks of abortion.
The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer is an international women's organization founded to protect the health and save the lives of women by educating and providing information on abortion as a risk factor for breast cancer. References can be viewed online.
