How can we maintain that unity?

          - I want to do more than diagnose the problem, I want to talk about what we can do to make sure it doesn’t happen to us.

          - I got to thinking about the unity that the early church enjoyed and how we can have that.

          - There is a Greek word - “homothumadon” - that pretty much only shows up in the book of Acts (11 of 12 NT uses). It means “with one mind, unanimous, in one accord.” I want to briefly look at what the early church was doing that kept their unity. (We’re just going to handle it briefly; I may come back and unpack this some other time.)

Maintaining The Unity Of The Church:

          1. Acts 1:14 - It all starts with PRAYER.

          2. Acts 2:46 - Stay focused on the PURPOSES.

          3. Acts 4:24 - Be quick to lift up PRAISE.

          4. Acts 5:12 - Be channels of God’s POWER.

          5. Acts 8:4-6 - Boldly PREACH the Word.

          6. Acts 15:25 - Maintain biblical PEACE.

          7. Acts 19:29 (and 7:57 and 18:12) - Don’t be surprised by PERSECUTION. ...

    Thought to Ponder

HOW TO LIVE TO PLEASE OUR HEAVENLY FATHER.

    I Thessalonians 5.12-28
I Thessalonians 4. Paul’s final instructions to the church at Thessalonica on How are we doing? Do we please him in our deeds our words, places we go, the people we spend time with?
Finally, Brethren, we instruct you on how to live
in order to please God, Now we ask you, in the name of our Lord Jesus, that you do this more and more.
There is a distinctive difference between the world and the church. There are four ways that people who are living to please God are distinctively different. It’s not that we LOVE MORE or CARE MORE or DO MORE than our neighbors, but that WE LIVE TO PLEASE GOD. That’s what sets His kingdom above all others. That’s what makes His people distinctively different - or should.
No. 1 priority. And he knows that Jesus said, how you treat people is how you treat me. So, he’s actively involved in community affairs - good works, and doing good things for others because he wants to please God. He doesn’t lie, steal, gossip or in any way abuse his neighbor or brother. Those in the world even go to church - sometimes three times a week , even become leaders in the church because they want to be well thought of and be seen by others They see the benefits of living a good moral life and, after all if there is a Heaven and Hell, they want to spend eternity in the best place.
If you get in the way of this man who does good things for the wrong motive, the wrong reasons, who is interested only in building his self up , they’ll run over and abuse you. they will gossip behind your back. These people will put you in your place to promote their own agenda. These folk will mistreat their family either physically, sexually, socially, religiously. Their religion will turn ugly hateful rigid and cold. They sometimes become intolerant of all in the church who don’t believe as they do on religious issues. They attack people instead of sin and Satan. Why?? They are trying to please and promote self.
Our example is Jesus. Can our neighbor see Jesus in us? Some, even in the church, reject the concept that God lives in His people. And you can tell by the way they act. Sure enough, he doesn’t, the world knows it, spouse, family and neighbors know it, their own children know it. Here it is - God lives in His church, His people, to the extent that we become like His Son, Jesus - to the extent that we live to please Him.
Jesus said, I came to do what? the will of the Father Jesus came lived died doing His will pleasing God.
Are we willing to be like Jesus? Verses 19, 22, and 17 and 18. This is obvious, isn’t it. that if we want to please Him we must find out what God wants. Hear Him. Listen to His voice.
II Peter 1.20-21 tells us that no prophecy comes from the mind of the prophet but scripture came by the will of God as the Holy Spirit moved the prophet. Do we test the words of a teacher, preacher, any preacher, all preachers, this preacher?
I never understood people who say they want to please God, yet never are into the word of God. They never come to the assembly nor to Bible class where His word, His will, His truth is taught. They never spend one hour in meditation, reflective thought about scripture. They are never found talking to others about the word. They talk about everything under the sun. 5.17-18. Pray always. Pray continually. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all things. Are we to be verbalizing to God continually? No. Paul is saying is that we should always be in an attitude of prayer. Keep in touch with God. Don’t be caught without God. Remember to give Him all the praise.

Thoughts to Ponder for the Day

Thoughts to Ponder for the Day

    Worship & Fellowship
    Matthew 4.10; 1 Corinthians 11.17-34; Acts 2.42-47; Acts 20.7

I am writing to the Christians to day and if you aren’t, I pray this will help you to decide to become a part of the family. Have you thought about what is worship? What we do each Sunday, Coming before God in humility, reverence, respect in a series of activities that praise and honor God in accordance with His sacred instructions. The Hebrews' writer tells us to "not forsake such assembly worship, as the habit of some Christians has become."

That worship that has to do with serving God on a daily basis. That worship best described by Paul in Romans chapter six and twelve where he contends that we are to become instruments of righteousness and living sacrifices.

You see the way we live the things we do day-in-day-out… are either serving God or serving Satan! Which is it in our life? We must be found behaving as Jesus demanded in His wilderness temptation "It is written, worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only."

We've examined the place of prayer in our worship, Along with Singing, Communion, And Giving. Worship is a fellowship event.
And if there is something wrong with our fellowship, it ceases to be worship. This idea is explain by both Jesus and Paul. Jesus said in Matthews 5.23 & 24 "If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift."
Paul's statement is from First Corinthians 11: where he is correcting the Corinthian church's worship during the Lord's Supper. 4 times, Paul makes the point that this is a fellowship event. That it is to be done when they come together as a church. And than if we are not in fellowship with one another, we are not worshiping correctly. In fact, he says that we bring spiritual harm upon ourselves, along with a judgment from God, Read also, Verses 17, 18, 20, 29, 30, and 31.

My friends there are no doubt that Assembly, first Day of the week worship, is to be a fellowship event? An event where we are mindful of others in our church family and our relationship to them. Biblical fellowship means to share something with another. For instance, if you are without something that you really need, and I share mine with you, we have fellowship.

Secondly, the term means that we share in something. If some of us are going through an emotional experience, a pain, a problem, a loss or joy, celebration; and another joins with us in those experience, then by definition we have had fellowship with one another.

Fellowship is a participation together in an effort in a work in a purpose with others. If I have work to do a purpose to accomplish, and you come alongside me and assist me in that work by adding your talents, abilities, your gifts... then we have jointly participated in fellowship. We serve God by joining our talents together

Fellowship is belonging to one another. Romans 12.4 & 5 says "Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, in Christ. God, the Bible knows nothing of solitary saints, spiritual hermits, isolated Christians, independent believers, Lone Ranger Christians! We are family, God’s family, relationship to God is personal but never intended it to be private. We are the family of God.
