    What Easter Really Means

When one thinks of Easter, visions of bunnies bring chocolate and candy while we sleep. Then that same bunny hides brightly colored eggs throughout our yards, making yard work messy. But what does Easter really mean?
While many will debate the origin of the word ‘Easter’. The standard acceptance is the it is the translation of the Greek word for Passover. Passover, we know is the Jewish celebration of deliverance from bondage in Egypt. It was at Passover that Jesus was in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast. But what does Passover have to do with us Christians?
Passover to the Jewish faith is the celebration of God sparing the firstborn of Israel as the Hebrews sacrificed an unblessed lamb to smear the blood of that lamb on their doors so death would pass over their homes and spare the first born of that house. It was the final act that caused the Pharaoh to release the Hebrews from bondage and allowed them to leave Egypt. From that point on the Nation of Israel celebrated this event with the annual Feast of Passover. At the direction of God Himself, the people would sacrifice their best, unblemished lamb at the temple in honor of their release from slavery in Egypt. It was at this Feast that Jesus and His disciples traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate at the temple. It was the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross that gives significance to the holiday for Christians.
Believers in Christ were delivered from the bondage of sin by the sacrifice of God’s own unblemished lamb, the Lamb of God - Jesus. God provided the sacrifice so that blood may be smeared on our doors and the death that comes from sin would pass us over. Then an amazing thing happened. The dead body of Jesus awoke and walked out of that tomb. In doing so God’s plan for our salvation became complete. Jesus’ blood was shed so that we can paint our doors, or our whole house, with the blood of Jesus to save us from the death that comes from sin and being apart from God. All we need to do is accept the gift that God has presented and to live a God centered life to receive His plan of salvation. So when it comes to the Easter season, forget about the bunnies and candy. Instead turn to Jesus and give thanks for the sacrifice that saves us from the death in God that comes from sin.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your sacrifice. You came among us in human form that is Jesus. You walked among us and taught us. Then you, in that human form, were nailed to that cross so that the blood of the perfect unblemished lamb would be shed to save us. In accepting that sacrifice, we accept your plan of salvation of our souls. In rising on the third day You defeated the evil one and his death over us from sin. We know that we do not deserve it, but your grace is great. Your love for us is great. May we live a life deserving of your grace. Amen.
