LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

A panda bear walks into a restaurant and orders a meal. After eating he pulls out a gun, shoots the place to the ground, and runs away. Quickly the bartender runs after him yelling, "HEY YOU CAN'T DO THIS!!!" The panda turns around and yells "Yes I can. Look me up in the encyclopedia!" So, the bartender looks up "Panda" in the encyclopedia, and it reads "Panda: increasingly rare species of bear that can be found in the eastern part of Asia. It eats shoots and leaves.

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE! When I Die

An elderly man, 82, just returned from the doctors only to find he didn't have long to live. So he summoned the three most important people in his life to tell them of his fate: 1. His Doctor 2. His Priest 3. His Lawyer. He said, "Well, today I found out I don't have long to live. So, I have summoned you three here, because you are the most important people in my life, and I need to ask a favor. Today, I am going to give each of you an envelope with $50,000 dollars inside. When I die, I would ask that all three of you throw the money into my grave." After the man passed on, the three people happened to run into each other. The doctor said, "I have to admit I kept $10,000 dollars of his money. He owed me from lots of medical bills. But, I threw the other $40,000 in like he requested. "The Priest said, "I have to admit also, I kept $25,000 dollars for the church. It’s all going to a good cause. I did, however, throw the other $25,000 in the grave." Well the Lawyer just couldn't believe what he was hearing! "I am surprised at you two for taking advantage of him like that. I wrote a check for the full amount and threw it all in!!!"

While getting a checkup, a man tells his doctor that he thinks his wife is losing her hearing. The doctor says, "You should do a simple test. Stand about 15 feet behind your wife and say 'honey?’ Move 3 feet closer and do it again. Keep moving 3 feet closer until she finally responds." Remember how close you were when she gives you an answer. That will help me know how bad her hearing loss is. About a month later the same guy is at the doctor again and the doctor asks, "Well, did you do that experiment with your wife's hearing?” The man says "yes". "How close did you get before she answered?" "Well, by the time I got about 3 feet away she just turned around and said "For the FIFTH TIME... WHAT???"

A famous lawyer, who had been a public defender for years, dies. He finds himself standing at the back of an enormous queue outside the gates of Heaven. The queue before him is enormous. The number of people who die in a single day appalls him. He can barely see St Peter sitting up on a podium outside the gates with a large book. Every now and then St Peter glances down the queue to see how he is going. Suddenly he catches the eye of the lawyer. He looks very surprised. He jumps down from the podium and comes running along the line until slightly out of breath he arrives beside the lawyer. He embraces him. He pulls him out of the queue and motions for him to come to the front of the queue. Another person questions what is happening and another angel speaks to the person. Word is passed along the queue and the lawyer is surprised, as people start nodding and clapping. He becomes embarrassed by all the attention and asks St Peter why he is getting the special attention. St Peter stops suddenly and looks concerned. "You are a lawyer aren't you?' "Yes" the lawyer replies. "Does this happen to all lawyers in heaven?" "Oh, no, "Said St Peter. "It's just you are the first one to ever get here."

    WHY I AM A DEMOCRAT

WHY I AM A DEMOCRAT Many of my Christian Brothers wonder and ask me how I could be a Democrat when they have two anti-Christian planks in their platform: (1) Abortion on demand and (2) support for gay marriage. As I said, these planks are anti-Christian and I deplore them. But I deplore more the immoral planks in the Republican Party. I deplore the recent budget they are proposing because it is immoral. I deplore their commitment to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act known as Obamacare. I deplore their commitment to continue the Bush Tax breaks to the wealthy, who certainly do not need them, and at the same time cut entitlement programs that help the poor which they need. These things are as immoral as abortion and gay marriage. Doing away with Obamacare and Medicare will kill mature productive people. If I had not had Medicare and my insurance supplement, I would not only be bankrupt, I would be dead. I believe killing productive and mature adults by denying them affordable insurance is is at least as immoral that abortion, if not more so. I am a Democrat because I believe they are the least of two evils. I believe both parties are evil, but I believe the Republican platform is more evil than the Democrat Platform. The Republican platform that balances the budget on the back of poor people is anti-Christian. The Prophets of the Old and New Testament denounce the selfishness of the wealthy and the oppression of the poor. Matthew 25 exposes the oppression of the poor and show the immorality of the Republican's budget. The Bible confronts every Evangelical lawmaker with more than 2,000 verses that call us to defend the poor and vulnerable. The anointing words of Jesus' Commission is: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,” Luke 4:18 (NRSV) Some Christians are so afraid they are going to help someone who does not deserve it. They are so afraid they are going to make people dependent. Jesus had no such fear. He said “so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.” Matthew 5:45 (NRSV) He healed ten lepers, and only one returned to give God the Glory. I would like a Biblical defense of the fear of helping someone who doesn't deserve it. Jesus died for all, and none of us deserve it. Whom did He save that deserved it? Whom did He heal that deserved it? Our fear of helping someone who doesn't deserve it in not like Jesus. It just excuses us from giving to the poor. I am adding some things I have blogged before and will quote from a Sojourners article that support my conviction. I have already footnoted my comments by the Prophets and the New Testament. Republican Budget is an Immoral Document note: The following remarks were given on Capitol Hill on Aug. 1st as part of a call from faith leaders across the religious spectrum urging Congress to extend the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit for low- and moderate-income Americans. “A budget is a moral document.” That phrase was coined by the faith community and has become a refrain in the ongoing debates over deficits and budgets. But in this week’s House vote on extending the Bush-era tax cuts, we see one more example of the priorities and principles of the broader GOP budget and how they apply to the rich and to the poor. Because of this, we must conclude that the Republican budget is an immoral document — in the way it treats the poor. I certainly don’t believe that all our Republican lawmakers came to Washington to hurt poor people, but it’s time for some of them to challenge the dominant forces in their party and face the consequences of such indefensible choices. We have a genuine hope for a long-term bipartisan solution and, in particular, a moral non-partisan commitment to protect the poor and vulnerable from being expendable in these fiscal debates. We should also say that Democratic budgets have not been models of fiscal responsibility and social justice either. But what the House budget is calling for is morally objectionable on religious and biblical grounds — and people of faith from all political stripes should say so. In particular, to roll back tax credits for the poor to help fund tax breaks for the rich is morally reprehensible, and the faith community has to speak out. Here is what the debate reveals from the highest moral lens: the House GOP budget wants to extend tax cuts and credits for the wealthiest people of our society while cutting tax benefits for the poorest — including millions of low-income working families with children at risk. Proven and effective tax credits, which can lift families out of poverty, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC), which have historically had bipartisan support, are now being dramatically reduced. All the while, tax cuts for the wealthy are further expanded and the amount of money the richest can keep from their estate taxes continues to grow. This is an egregious contrast and a starkly immoral budget choice. To reward the rich even more while actually punishing the poor is a direct offense to all of our religious traditions. For Catholic lawmakers, it is a fundamental violation of Catholic social teaching, and the Catholic bishops have said so. They called this budget choice “unwise” and “unjust.” Every Catholic lawmaker who votes for those misplaced priorities should be held accountable by their church. But that accountability can’t stop with Catholics. The Bible confronts every Evangelical lawmaker with more than 2,000 verses that call us to defend the poor and vulnerable. If we say we believe the Bible, we simply can’t support policies that directly reward the rich and punish the poor: Christian lawmakers can’t keep going into their prayer breakfasts and leaving their Bibles at the door. The Senate Democrats should be thanked for blocking these cuts and protecting tax credits for low-income families last week. But, to be honest, neither party has clearly and publicly stated a fundamental principle that the poor and vulnerable should be protected. In these critically important deficit debates, that principle is crucial and must be central to policy decisions. Reducing excessive deficits is a moral act, but also how we reduce them is a moral issue. It’s time for both parties to commit themselves to this principle: We will not reduce the deficit in ways that increase poverty and economic inequality. This is the fundamental principle of the Circle of Protection, a broad table of more than 60 church leaders and organizations across the theological and political spectrum committed to protecting the poor and vulnerable in these crucial fiscal decisions. We will continue to press and pressure the leadership of both parties to uphold that principle. Our nation has achieved bipartisan agreement to that principle in past deficit reduction, and we must do it again. This is a moral and religious imperative that we should hold all lawmakers to. The Circle of Protection will do that on both sides of the aisle. In all of our decisions, the poor and vulnerable — the ones Jesus called “the least of these” — should be protected, especially by people of faith, regardless of their party affiliations and political philosophies. It’s time to cut through all the political clutter, ideology, and self-interest. The Christian leaders of the Circle of Protection feel called by God in saying this to our political leaders: It’s time to do the right thing and protect the poor. Jim Wallis is the author of Rediscovering Values: A Guide for Economic and Moral Recovery, and CEO of Sojourners. Follow Jim on Twitter @JimWallis. I recall reading a book on psychology by Nathanial Branden. In his preface he gave his testimony. He said he was standing in line to be baptized. A young woman was being baptized ahead of him. When she came up out of the water her white robe clove to her body. He lusted after her. He swore off Christianity at that point and became a militant atheist. Nathaniel Branden was a co-hart with Ayn Rand, also a militant atheist. Christians should be concerned that Ayn Rand’s book Atlas Shrugged ranked second only to the Bible in a major poll.search.barnesandnoble.com/My-Years-with-Ayn-Rand. Branden’s and Rand's book promote the psychology of self-esteem promoting selfishness and greed as virtues. A mature Christian will recognize immediately that selfishness and greed are anti-Christian, just the opposite of the teachings of Jesus Christ. Of further concern should be that the political philosophy of the party of demolition is based “…on the philosophy of the Russian-American philosopher and novelist Ayn Rand (1905–1982). Her philosophy is: “…the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.” Even a babe in Christ recognizes this as a godless philosophy. Nations are not born again. Citizens are! If our founding Fathers intended to establish a Christian Nation, a Theocracy or Christocracy, they wrote a very poor Constitution. If our founding Fathers intended to establish a Christian Nation, a Theocracy or Christocracy surely they could have done better than to write in the Constitution: “... no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” This means that a Protestant, Catholic, Buddhist, Muslim, Atheist, or any other religious status can be a candidate for public office. How clear is this that they had no intention of establishing a Christian Nation?! If our founding Fathers intended to establish a Christian Nation, a Theocracy or Christocracy surely they could have done better than to write in the Bill of Rights: the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” This means Congress cannot make laws favoring one religion over another. I am a Democrat because Abortion and Homosexuality are not the only immoral things that enter a Party Platform. I choose the be a Democrat because they are the lesser of two evils. My Christian integrity demands I support the lesser of two evils.

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE! Job At the Zoo!

This guy needs a job and decides to apply at the zoo. As it happened, their star attraction, a gorilla, had passed away the night before and they had carefully preserved his hide. They tell this guy that they'll pay him well if he would dress up in the gorillas skin and pretend to be the gorilla so people will keep coming to the zoo. Well, the guy has his doubts, but Hey! He needs the money, so he puts on the skin and goes out into the cage. The people all cheer to see him. He plays up to the audience and they just eat it up. This isn't so bad, he thinks, and he starts really putting on a show, jumping around, beating his chest and roaring, swinging around. During one acrobatic attempt, though, he loses his balance and crashes through some safety netting, landing square in the middle of the lion cage! As he lies there stunned, the lion roars. He's terrified and starts screaming, "Help, Help, Help!" The lion races over to him, places his paws on his chest and hisses, "Shut up or we'll BOTH lose our jobs!"

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE! TRADING GAS CAPS

I have a friend who filled his car with gas at a self-service gas station. After he had paid and driven away, he realized that he had left the gas cap on top of his car. He stopped and looked and, sure enough, it was lost. Well, he thought for a second and realized that other people must have done the same thing, and that it was worth going back to look by the side of the road since even if he couldn't find his own gas cap, he might be able to find one that fit. Sure enough, he hadn't been searching long when he found a gas cap. He tried it on, and it went into place with a satisfying click. "Great," he thought, "I lost my gas cap, but I found another one that fits. And this one's even better because it locks..."

Slaying the Righteous With the Wicked

Slaying the Righteous With the Wicked Genesis 18:25 (NRSV) 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" There is going on in our Nation something that is a far thing from what God would do...He would not slay the righteous with the wicked. Before He would bring hell fire and brimstone down on Sodom and Gomorrah, He would deliver the righteous first from the cities. Before the courts right now is whether or not picture I.D.'s should be required at voting poles to prevent ineligible people from voting. It has been shown in Florida and other places that enforce this rule that citizens have been denied voting. One couple was denied to vote whom the people working the voter's table knew personally. Many elderly and handicapped people are hard pressed to get photo I.D.s. The rule denies innocent people their right to vote. There should be as great an effort to insure citizens can exercise their right to vote as there is to deny the ineligible to vote. In stead of delivering the innocent people from this judgment, many eligible voters are denied their right to vote along with the ineligible voters. Instead of putting our emphasis of denying illegal aliens from voting there should be equal emphasis on making sure citizens are not denied their right to vote. Our policy of preventing illegal aliens from voting should not in itself be the stumbling block to citizens wanting to vote. Far be it from us to prevent citizens from voting by our policy to prevent illegal aliens from voting. I am not saying that we should not have a policy that would prevent illegal aliens from voting. But our policy should not be the instrument that denies citizens their right to vote.

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE! WHERE'S MOMMY?

My six-year-old son seems to demand my attention just when I am most busy around the house. My standard reply has been, "I'm busy right now. Go ask your mother." The disappointed look often on his face as I sent him away convinced me to change my priorities. I resolved to give him my immediate attention whenever he asked. My resolve was quickly tested. I had just climbed to the top of our two-storied house, paintbrush and bucket in hand. As I dipped my brush into the paint I heard his little voice call, "Daddy, Daddy." Determined to keep my new resolution, I immediately laid paintbrush and bucket aside and climbed back down to the ground to see what he wanted. I got down on both knees, looked him straight in the face and asked, "Well, now what can I do for you, son?" His reply: "Daddy, where's Mommy?"

An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, "Ah, you're an engineer — you're in the wrong place." So the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements. After a while, they've got air conditioning, flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is becoming a pretty popular guy. One day God calls Satan up on the telephone and asks with a sneer, "So, how's it going down there in hell?" Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We've got air conditioning, flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next." God replies, "What??? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake — he should never have gotten down there; send him up here." Satan says, "No way! I like having an engineer on the staff, and I'm keeping him." God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue." Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

(CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS POST)When Albert Einstein was making the rounds of the speaker's circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work. One night as they were driving to yet another rubber-chicken dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who somewhat resembled Einstein in looks & manner) that he was tired of speechmaking. "I have an idea, boss," his chauffeur said. "I've heard you give this speech so many times. I'll bet I could give it for you." Einstein laughed loudly and said, "Why not? Let's do it!" When they arrive at the dinner, Einstein donned the chauffeur's cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. The chauffeur gave a beautiful rendition of Einstein's speech and even answered a few questions expertly. Then a supremely pompous professor asked an extremely esoteric question about anti-matter formation, digressing here and there to let everyone in the audience know that he was nobody's fool. Without missing a beat, the chauffeur fixed the professor with a steely stare and said, "Sir, the answer to that question is so simple that I will let my chauffeur, who is sitting in the back, answer it for me."

    WHY I AM A DEMOCRAT

Many of my Christian Brothers wonder and ask me how I could be a Democrat when they have two anti-Christian planks in their platform: (1) Abortion on demand and (2) support for gay marriage. As I said, these planks are anti-Christian and I deplore them. But I deplore more the immoral planks in the Republican Party. I deplore the recent budget they are proposing because it is immoral. I deplore their commitment to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act known as Obamacare. I deplore their commitment to continue the Bush Tax breaks to the wealthy who certainly do not need them and at the same time cut entitlement programs that help the poor which they need. I believe both parties are evil, but I believe the Republican platform is more evil that the Democrat Platform. He said “so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.” Matthew 5:45 (NRSV) He healed ten lepers and only one returned to give God the Glory. I would like a Biblical defense of the fear of helping someone who doesn't deserve. Jesus died for all and none of us deserve it. Republican Budget is an Immoral Document Note: The following remarks were given on Capitol Hill on Aug.1st as part of a call from faith leaders across the religious spectrum urging Congress to extend the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit for low- and moderate-income Americans. A budget is a moral document. That phrase was coined by the faith community and has become a refrain in the ongoing debates over deficits and budgets. We have a genuine hope for a long term bipartisan solution and, in particular, a moral non-partisan commitment to protect the poor and vulnerable from being expendable in these fiscal debates. And the Circle of Protection will do that on both sides of the aisle. Jim Wallis is the author of Rediscovering Values: A Guide for Economic and Moral Recovery, and CEO of Sojourners.Follow Jim on Twitter @JimWallis. If our founding Fathers intended to establish a Christian Nation, a Theocracy or Christocracy they wrote a very poor Constitution. I choose the be a Democrat because they are the lessor of two evils. My Christian integrity demands I support the lessor of two evils.
