LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

Bob had finally made it to the last round of the 1,000,000 Question. The night before the big question, he told the host MC that he desired a question on American History.

The big night arrived. Bob made his way onstage in front of the studio and TV audience. He had become the talk of the week. He was the best guest this show had ever seen. The MC stepped up to the mike.

"Bob, you have chosen American History as your final question. You know that if you correctly answer this question, you will walk away 1,000,000 dollars richer. Are you ready?"

Bob nodded with a cocky confidence -- the crowd went nuts. He hadn't missed a question all week.

"Bob, yours is a two-part question. As you know, you may answer either part first. As a rule, the second half of the question is always easier. Which part would you like to take a stab at first?"

Bob was becoming more noticeably nervous. He couldn't believe it, but he was not sure, but American History was his easiest subject, and he played it safe.

"I'll try the easier part first."

The MC nodded approvingly. "Here we go Bob. I will ask you the second half first, then the first half."

The audience grew silent with gross anticipation...

"Bob, here is your question: And in what year did it happen?"

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

On my first day working at the gas station, I watched a senior co-worker measure the level of gasoline in the under-ground tanks by lowering a giant measuring stick down into them.

"What would happen if I threw a lit match into the hole?" I joked.

"It would go out," he replied very matter-of-factly.

"Really?" I asked, surprised to hear that.  "Is there a lack of oxygen down there or some safety device that would extinguish it before the fumes ignited?"

"No," my co-worker continued.  "The force from the explosion would blow out the match."

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

"What do you have to do to become a doctor?" my six-year-old granddaughter once asked.

Her dad, seeing an opportunity, said, "You have to do extremely well in school, take a lot of math and science, get into an excellent college, make the highest grades possible, and then go to med school, and follow that with an internship. Then you can start your own practice. Honey, as smart as you are, you can be anything you want to be."

Erin gave all this a moment's thought and then asked,

"What do you have to do to be queen?"

My God Shall Supply All Your Needs!

Philippians 4:19(NRSV) “And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

The Pastor walked to the pulpit, laid his Bible open on the pulpit, adjusted his handkerchief, straightened his tie, and tried to have the appropriate facial expression. He announced to the congregation, “Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that we have enough money to complete our new building project.” The air was filled with anticipation as he continued. “The bad news is that the money is still in your pockets.”

I believe that God has created enough resources to meet the needs of every person and animal to which He has given life. God is not seeking to destroy those who do not have enough to live. He is seeking people who will share what He has given them with others who have need.

The problem is that God gave us what we have not only to bless ourselves, but to bless all the families of the earth. We more often than not use what God has given us on ourselves but not others. As the Scripture says the purpose of work is to have something to give to those in need: Ephesians 4:28(NRSV) “…let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy.” The purpose of work is to help those in need.

As Tony Campolo has said, “There is nothing wrong with making a million dollars. It is just wrong to keep it.”

There is a philosophy that is rampant in some politicians that is based on the philosophy of the Russian-American philosopher and novelist Ayn Rand (1905–1982). Her philosophy is: “…the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.” Even a babe in Christ recognizes this as a godless philosophy.

The philosophy of Ayn Rand drives many of our American legislators. Selfishness and greed are virtues. We are to pursue our own happiness. Look after number one.

This philosophy also promotes economic Darwinism: the survival of the fittest. Of course, the fittest in Darwinism economic system are the rich. (I asked a person how his daughter was doing? He replied, “She’s driving a Mercedes.”) The laborers are the slaves of the rich, who make them rich. The Ayn Rand legislators balance the budget on the backs of the working class, the seniors, and those who for varied reasons are not working. The fittest rich pay little or no taxes. The government is financed by the taxes of the middle class.

I do not claim to have worked out a Christian Economy. However, I am sure it is not godless Communism, and I am sure it is not driven by Ann Rand’s ‘Look after number one! I read a disturbing article in “God Politics” a blog posted by Jim Wallace. The article was written by Ernesto Tinajero. He wrote on July 12, 2011::

In one of the most-viewed articles on FoxNews.com several weeks ago, writer Onkar Ghate presents a choice of competing moralities between Ayn Rand and Jesus. While his exegetical powers leave much to be desired, he is correct in noting that the choice many Americans will have to make, as far as political philosophies go, is between Ayn Rand and Jesus.

I grew sad reading while his comments stating that Ayn Rand is the best representative of the neo-conservative vision for America — one where the individual is responsible only for the individual and selfishness is a virtue.

If we take a little walk through the Bible starting with Genesis, the first thing we see is the wonderful creation that God made. He placed Adam and Eve in a perfect garden. God made them gardeners to care for their habitat. Does that sound like the EPA? They enjoyed their work because there was no such thing as toil yet.

Of course, we all know the story of how Satan deceived Eve to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit. Then she gave some to Adam who ate it. We see God pronounced judgment on Satan, Eve, and Adam. Satan, the Serpent, was to crawl on the ground and eat dust all of his days. The pain of child birth was multiplied for Eve. The ground was cursed; toil was added to work.

In addition, God turned Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. God placed guards at the entrance of the Garden to prevent man’s re-entry and his eating of the Tree of Life and thereby living forever in his fallen condition.

Yet, there was mercy and hope. God made a promise in His condemnation of Satan: Genesis 3:15(NRSV) “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” God promised that a Savior and Deliverer would come from the seed of woman who would crush the head of Satan, the Serpent. This Savior would recreate man into the creature God had intended him to be in the first place. He has come and done that!

We need to think a little more of man’s crisis. Adam and Eve did not think of the consequences that their disobedience would have on their children.  Certainly, they didn’t think of the effect their disobedience would have on the creation. Nonetheless, sin had a cosmic effect.

God turned man out of the Garden, separated from God in the world without God and without hope. Paul put it this way: Ephesians 2:12(NRSV) “remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.” All men are born in the world having no hope and without God in the world.”

My son was born in the Philippines because that was where his mother was. Every child is born in darkness, in the world without God and without hope because that is where all parents since Adam and Eve were when their children are born. There is only one escape from their condition, the Savior, Jesus Christ promised to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden after the fall.

We don’t walk very far in the Scriptures to find sin in action: Cain killed Abel. When God came looking for Abel, he asked Cain, “Where is your brother, Abel?” to which he replied: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The implied answer is “Yes”. Some people would say that answer is liberal It is certainly not consistent with Ayn Rand’s philosophy of ‘self interest’.

Ayn Rand’s philosophy contradicts Paul in Philippians 2:4(KJV) “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”

If we had time and space we could produce many Scriptural attacks against greed and selfishness which are virtues in Ayn Rand’s philosophy.

Soon after the House of Representatives changed leadership in 2010, several bills were passed, even some eliminating Medicare and designed to dismantle Medicaid and the new health care program.

Shortly after these bills were passed in the House, I came across Isaiah’s Words from the Lord: Isaiah 10:1-3(NRSV) “Ah, you who make iniquitous decrees, who write oppressive statutes, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be your spoil, and that you may make the orphans your prey! What will you do on the day of punishment, in the calamity that will come from far away? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth,”

Should those in power in the House have their way, scenes will multiply that we have already seen enough of because people have no insurance. As a minister, and social worker I have talked with many who won’t go to a doctor when they are sick because they have no insurance and cannot afford to pay. Re-read Isaiah’s Word of the Lord and ask if it is the Christian thing to do to reduce the life span of American citizens by passing “iniquitous decrees, who write oppressive statutes”? Why won’t these people protect the life span of elderly, and yet do everything in their power to protect the life of the unborn. Is the life of the unborn more sacred than the life of the elderly? Or is it just money talking? Don’t spend money on abortion and don’t spend money on the senior citizens. Is the sanctity of life their real motivating force? Where is the sanctity of the life of the elderly? Life is sacred from the womb to the tomb.

Listen to the commission of Jesus: Luke 4:18(NRSV) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,”

Does this sound like Glen Beck who said that if your pastor uses the words social and economic justice, run from that church and report the pastor to his denominational headquarters as a Communist or Socialist? Is that what Jesus would say and do?

Read this story given by Jesus: Luke 10:29-37(NRSV) “But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity.
He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

That sounds like universal health care. It sounds like social and economic justice. Read this story of economic justice given by Jesus. Matthew 20:1-16(NRSV) “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?
Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Shouldn’t Christians be as generous as God has been to them?)

The employer ran across some men who were just standing around. The employer asked them why they were not working and they replied because no man had hired them. These men were not lazybones. They were ready to work when the opportunity presented itself. The employer hired men at different times a day, but paid those that went to work last a day’s wages as he did those who went to work early and worked late.

Jesus, our God knows it takes a day’s wages for anyone to live whether he goes to work early or late or doesn’t go to work at all. Do you think that Jesus would eliminate unemployment insurance benefits? (It is insurance, not welfare.) Do you think that Jesus would eliminate minimum wage laws as one person running for President has stated she would support? Actually, Jesus would pass legislation that the minimum wage would be what it takes for a person to live that day. I do believe God has provided for every soul he created but that selfish and greedy people are holding back what belongs to the needy. They are holding by what God has given them so that they could help the needy.

God calls America to purge her economic philosophy from that of Ayn Rand who teaches that selfishness and greed are virtues. She teaches that the responsibility of a person is to pursue his or her own happiness. Do you recognize something unscriptural in that philosophy? We are challenged to remove that philosophy from our social and economic system.

Some years ago I went to get lunch with a co-worker. The subject of Communism came up. I remember saying to him that Communism fails because it assumes that man will do right. Communism believes man is basically good. Capitalism is the most successful economic system because it is based on the fallen nature of man—selfishness and greed—what’s in it for me! Why should I do this or that? But Christians are new creatures in Christ. New Creatures in Christ know that selfishness and greed are vices. Christians must seek righteousness in their government. They need to purge their government of selfishness and greed.

Matthew 25 tells us that there is coming a time when “the nations will be gathered before him” (Jesus). These nations will be judged on the basis of what their citizen’s do. The Scriptures are directed to the citizens: “Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matt 25:41-46

Consider what the State of Texas did unto Jesus: The State of Texas facing a law to balance their budget and refusing to raise taxes, balanced their budget on the backs of the middle class and the poor. One of the most immoral actions they took was to take money designated to help the poor pay electric bills they could not afford and use it in their budget cutting process. Just today I heard of a man dying in his home of heat, with the air conditioner off because he could not afford the electric bill. Where is the sanctity of life they profess with their mouths? How much more immoral can our legislators be than to rob from a designated fund meant to help poor people pay their electric bill and use the money to balance their budget?

When the citizens of the United States of America allow their legislators cut benefits to seniors and the poor they are doing these injustices to Jesus. When the citizens of the United States of America exempt the wealthy from contributing additional taxes to assist the most vulnerable citizens of our nation the citizens are doing Jesus a grave injustice.

Many Americans insist that our Constitution is based on Judeo-Christian Principles, yet many of these same American’s are denying Christian principles from being applied to our economic system. The citizens of the United States will be held accountable for the lack of social and economic justice in our nation.

Tell your legislators to do what Jesus would do.

A man limped into a hospital to have his foot X-rayed, and was asked to wait for the results. Some time later an orderly appeared and handed the man a large pill.

WEATHER FORECASTER: To tell the weather, go to your back door and look for the dog.

If the dog is at the door and he is wet, it's probably raining.

But if the dog is standing there really soaking wet, it is probably raining really hard.

If the dog's fur looks like it's been rubbed the wrong way, it's probably windy.

If the dog has snow on his back, it's probably snowing.

Of course, to be able to tell the weather like this, you have to leave the dog outside all the time, especially if you expect bad weather.

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

After tucking their three-year-old child Sammy in for bed one night, his parents heard sobbing coming from his room.

Rushing back in, they found him crying hysterically. He managed to tell them that he had swallowed a penny and he was sure he was going to die. No amount of talking was helping.

His father, in an attempt to calm him down, palmed a penny from his pocket and pretended to pull it from Sammy's ear. Sammy was delighted.

In a flash, he snatched it from his father's hand, swallowed, and then cheerfully demanded, "Do it again, Dad!"

An Amish boy and his father were visiting a mall for the first time.  They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again.

The boy asked, "What is this, Father?" The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, "Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don't know what it is."

While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, an old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button.  The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room.

The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially.  They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.

Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous, 24-year-old blonde woman stepped out.

The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son, "Go get your mother."

It was a terrible night, blowing cold and rain in a most frightful manner.  The streets were deserted and the local baker was just about to close up shop when a little man slipped through the door.  He carried an umbrella, blown inside out, and was bundled in two sweaters and a thick coat.  But even so he still looked wet and bedraggled.

As he unwound his scarf he said to the baker, "May I have two bagels to go, please?"
