    WHAT WE MUST DO?

The gospel offers blessings; what must we do to receive them?  The proper answer is 'nothing'!  We do not have to *do* anything.  We have only to *believe*.  Our response is not 'the works of the law' but 'hearing with faith', that is, not obeying the law, but believing the gospel.  For obeying is to attempt to do the work of salvation ourselves, whereas believing is to let Christ be our Saviour and to rest in his finished work. It's all in the punctuation:

An English professor wrote the words, "Woman without her man is nothing" on the blackboard and directed his students to punctuate it correctly.

The men wrote: "Woman, without her man, is nothing."

The women wrote: "Woman: Without her, man is nothing."

    THOUGHT FOR TODAY!

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."* -- Melody Beattie

Mr. Norton was in the hospital recovering from an operation when the nurse on duty received a call from a man who asked how Mr.  Norton was doing.

"Oh, quite well.  We expect he'll be released in the morning."

    "Very good, thank you."

"May I ask who is calling so that I can tell Mr. Norton?" inquired the nurse.

"This IS Mr. Norton.  The doctors don't tell me anything!"

    The Gospel According To Paul

As we read Paul's letters, he gives us a superb exposition of the gospel of God's grace.  He tells us what God has done for guilty sinners like us who are without excuse and deserve nothing at his hand but judgment.  He declares that God sent his Son to die for our sins on the cross and to rise again, and that if we are united to Jesus Christ, by faith inwardly and by baptism outwardly, then we die with him and rise again with him, and experience a new life in him.  It is a magnificent gospel that Paul unfolds. Bob had this problem of getting up late in the morning and was always late for work.

After a few weeks of this, his boss was mad and threatened to fire him if he didn't do something about it.

So Bob went to his doctor, who gave him a pill and told him to take it before he went to bed.  He got a great night's sleep and actually beat the alarm in the morning.  After a leisurely breakfast, he cheerfully drove to work.

"Boss," he said, "The pill my doctor subscribed me actually worked!"

"That's all fine," said the boss, "But where were you yesterday?"

HEALTH CARE IS A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT

The problem with our nation’s health care system — the preoccupations of pundits and politicians nothwithstanding — is not a broken website.

    This is the problem:
    • We spend more on health care per person, by far, than any other developed country.
    • Yet millions and millions of our citizens are left without insurance, leading to 45,000 preventable deaths every year.
    • And those who can afford the outrageous cost extracted by the private, for-profit insurance industry often receive inadequate care or are denied care altogether.
    I’ll say that again:

A fellow American dies every 12 minutes because this country — practically alone among industrialized nations — still permits the for-profit health insurance industry to decide who can or cannot see a doctor and to commodify a fundamental human right.

    Our citizens need — and morality demands — a single-payer, Medicare-for-All system.

While sports fishing off Melbourne Beach, a tourist capsized his boat.  He could swim, but his fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned craft.

"Naw," the man hollered back, "they ain't been around for years!"

"Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming leisurely toward the shore.

About halfway there he asked the guy, "How'd you get rid of the gators?"

"We didn't do nothin'," the beach bum said.

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

This past fall semester, at Duke University, there were two sophomores who were taking Organic Chemistry and who did pretty well on all of the quizzes, midterms, labs, etc. Going into the final exam, they had solid "A's."

These two friends were so confident going into the final that the weekend before finals week (even though the Chem. final was on Monday), they decided to go up to University of Virginia to a party with some friends.

So they did this and had a great time. However, they ended up staying longer than they planned, and they didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they found Professor Aldric after the final and explained to him why they missed it. They told him that they went up to Virginia for the weekend, and had planned to come back in time to study, but that they had a flat tire on the way back and didn't have a spare and couldn't get help for a long time. So they were late getting back to campus.

Aldric thought this over and agreed that they could make up the final on the following day. The two guys were elated and relieved. So, they studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Aldric had told them.

He placed them in separate rooms, handed each of them a test booklet and told them to begin. They looked at the first problem, which was something simple about free radical formation and was worth 5 points. "Cool" they thought, "this is going to be easy." They did that problem and then turned the page.

They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on the next page.

It said: (95 points) "Which tire?"

    GOSPEL: PROMISE AND DEMAND!

Promise and condition: offer and demand
The gospel offer is not unconditional.  It does not benefit its hearers willy nilly, 'whether they hear or refuse to hear'.  It is clear that sinners cannot be forgiven if they persist in clinging to their sins.  If they desire God to turn from their sins in remission, they must themselves turn from them in repentance.  We are charged, therefore, to proclaim the condition as well as the promise of forgiveness.  Remission is the gospel offer; repentance is the gospel demand.

On the first day of Spring Training, a baseball scout brings a race horse with him to add to the starting line-up.

The coach asks, "What did you bring that horse here for?"

The scout replies, "Wait until you see him bat."

All the players are laughing, until the horse comes to bat.  At this point, the horse grabs the bat, and everyone quiets down.  They stare at the horse.

The pitcher, just shrugs his shoulders, and throws the ball toward home plate, when astonishingly the horse hits the ball deep in the outfield.

The horse just stands there and does not move.  The manager then yells at the baseball scout to tell the horse to run to first base.

The scout looks back at the manager and yells back, "If he could run, he'd be at Belmont!"

    Non-negotiable revelation

The gospel is a non-negotiable revelation from God. We may certainly discuss its meaning and its interpretation, so long as our purpose is to grasp it more firmly ourselves and commend it more acceptably to others. But we have no liberty to sit in judgment on it, or to tamper with its substance. For it is God's gospel not ours, and its truth is to be received not criticized, declared not discussed. JOHN STOTT

He was not well-educated and rather rough and crude around the edges, but he was recently converted and now on fire for the Lord.

He was constantly pestering the pastor to give him some work that would be helpful to the church.  Finally the pastor agreed.  He gave the man a list of ten people who hadn't been in church for years nor made any financial contribution.  Some of these were quite prominent in the community.

The pastor said, "What I want you to do is get these people back to church, however you can.  You can use church stationery if you want, but get these people back to church."

Three weeks later the pastor got an envelope in the mail from a prominent doctor whose name had been on the list, along with a check for $1,000 and a note that read, "Dear Pastor, Please excuse my inactivity at church.  I really have no excuse.  Accept this check as a partial contribution for all the Sundays I've missed, and be assured I will never, by choice, miss worship again.

    C. just let her go, after all she is your mother?

When it came my turn to answer everybody looked my way because I was always cutting up in class...but being very serious I said..."The first thing I would do would be call for back-up"

Another woman in the class said, "it was very apparent that I knew nothing about the law."

To which I answered that it was apparent that she knew NOTHING ABOUT MY MOTHER!!!....

P.S....On the state exam I was the only one who answered the question correctly.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Humility and meekness are not weakness and timidity. Humility is emptying ourselves and taking upon us the will of God. Humility is denying oneself, taking up our cross, and following Jesus. Humility is obedience to Jesus Christ.*

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

The following is an ad from a newspaper which appeared four days in a row - the last three hopelessly trying to correct the first day's mistake.

    MONDAY:
For sale: R.  D.  Jones has one sewing machine for sale.  Phone 948-0707 after 7 P.M..  and ask for Mrs.  Kelly who lives with him cheap.

    TUESDAY:
Notice: We regret having erred In R.  D.  Jones' ad yesterday.  It should have read "One sewing machine for sale cheap.  Phone 948-0707 and ask for Mrs.  Kelly, who lives with him after 7 P.M."

    WEDNESDAY:
Notice: R.  D.  Jones has informed us that he has received several annoying telephone calls because of the error we made in the classified ad yesterday.  The ad stands correct as follows: "For sale -- R.  D.  Jones has one sewing machine for sale.  Cheap.  Phone 948-0707 after 7 P.M.  and ask for Mrs.  Kelly who loves with him."

    THURSDAY:
Notice: I, R.  D.  Jones, have no sewing machine for sale.  I intentionally broke it.  Don't call 948-0707 as I have had the phone disconnected.  I have not been carrying on with Mrs.  Kelly.  Until yesterday she was my housekeeper, but she has now quit.

The newly-married husband came home from the office to find his young wife in floods of tears.  "Darling, whatever is the matter?" he asked.

"Sweetheart," she sobbed, "the most terrible thing has happened!  I cooked my very first Beef Bourguignon for you, and I got it out of the oven to season it, and the phone rang.  When I came back from answering the phone," she sobbed again.  "I found that the cat had eaten it!"

"Don't worry, darling," said her husband.

"Don't cry.  We can get a new cat tomorrow."

    EMPTY RELIGION!

We need to listen again to the biblical criticism of religion.  No book, not even by Marx and his followers, is more scathing of empty religion than the Bible.  The prophets of the eighth and seventh centuries BC were outspoken in their denunciation of the formalism and hypocrisy of Israelite worship.  Jesus then applied their critique to the Pharisees of his day: 'These people ... honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me' (Is. 29:13; Mk. 7:6).  And this indictment of religion by the Old Testament prophets and by Jesus is uncomfortably applicable to us and our churches today.  Too much of our worship is ritual without reality, form without power, fun without fear, religion without God. A preacher visits an elderly woman from his congregation.  As he sits on the couch he notices a large bowl of peanuts on the coffee table.

"Mind if I have a few" he asks.

"No, not at all" the woman replied.

They chat for an hour and as the preacher stands to leave, he realizes that instead of eating just a few peanuts, he emptied most of the bowl.

"I'm terribly sorry for eating all your peanuts, I really just meant to eat a few."

"Oh that's all right" the elderly woman says.

“Well,” said Johnny, “I do not know exactly, but it’s sure worth two dollars.

    What Happened To You?

Think about the amazing thing that happened to you to moment you repented of your sins and confessed that Jesus Christ is Lord with a willingness to obey Him. Romans 10:8-10 (NRSV)

8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.

First if all, your sins were forgiven. The Lord laid all your sins on Jesus Who bore them on Calvary. Isaiah 53:6 (NRSV) ...

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Second, you were redeemed from Satan, sin, and self by the price Jesus paid for you. You no longer belong to Satan, sin, or yourself. Now you belong to Jesus. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NRSV)

19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

You were recreated. You are a new creation, created in Christ unto good works which God beforehand ordained that we should walk in them. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NRSV)

17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

    Ephesians 2:10 (NRSV)

10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

God began a good work in you and is faithfully working in you to complete the good work He began and will keep on working until Jesus comes again. Philippians 1:6 (NRSV)

6 I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The farmer's son was returning from the market with a crate of chickens his father had entrusted to him, when all of a sudden the box fell and broke open.

Chickens scurried off in different directions, but the determined boy walked all over the neighborhood scooping up the wayward birds and returning them to the repaired crate.  Hoping he had found them all, the boy reluctantly returned home, expecting the worst.

"Pa, the chickens got loose," the boy confessed sadly, "but I managed to find all twelve of them."

"Well, you done a good job, son," the farmer beamed.

Pride is more than the first of the seven deadly sins; it is itself the essence of all sin.  For it is the stubborn refusal to let God be God, with the corresponding ambition to take his place.  It is the attempt to dethrone God and enthrone ourselves.  Sin is self-deification.  JOHN STOTT

For months he had been her devoted admirer.  Now, at long last, he had collected up sufficient courage to ask her the most momentous of all questions:

"There are quite a lot of advantages to being a bachelor," he began, "but there comes a time when one longs for the companionship of another being -- a being who will regard one as perfect, as an idol; whom one can treat as one's absolute own; who will be kind and faithful when times are hard; who will share one's joys and sorrows."

To his delight he saw a sympathetic gleam in her eyes.  Then she nodded in agreement.

Finally, she responded, "I think its a great idea!  Can I help you choose which puppy to buy?"

By 'sin' the Bible means self-centredness.  God's order is that we love him first, our neighbour next and ourselves last.  Sin is precisely the reversal of this order.  It is to put ourselves first, our neighbour next (when it suits our convenience) and God somewhere in the distant background. THE FAST OF GOD'S CHOICE

    The Fast of God's Choice
    Isaiah 58:1-11
The disciples of John asked Jesus in Matthew 9:14 (NRSV)
14Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus answered their question in verse 15
15And Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.
Clearly, while Jesus was here in the flesh, there was no occasion for His disciples to fast. Does this suggest that the closer we are to Jesus, the less we need to fast? I’m not sure about that.
The fact is that when Jesus left them to go back to the Father, the disciples would, in fact, find occasions to fast. Jesus didn't exactly command that we fast. He simply promised that we would fast after He ascended to His Father. It seems to suggest to me that fasting is a natural part of the Christian life now.
Beloved, there are occasions which we should fast. But Jesus did caution us about our motives to fast. Matthew 6:16-18 (NRSV)
16“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Jesus said, “And whenever you fast....” He does assume that his disciples are going to fast. However, as I read what Jesus said about fasting, He gives a lot of caution and negative restrictions to fasting. He doesn’t disapprove of fasting, but He does reveal that there are more important things that we should not neglect for fasting.
In our passage we just read, Jesus cautions about our motives when we fast. It is something to be done in secret, not to be seen of men. This is a very difficult task. I know it is difficult because so many I have known that practice fasting have to let others know they are fasting, if not in their appearance, they have to tell people that they are fasting. Jesus specifically advises us when we fast to do it secretly only for the Father to see, not for other people to see. Jesus calls those who fast to be seen of others hypocrites.
There are times when someone who is fasting must let others know, but we must not brag about our practice of fasting.
There are many kinds of fast that people practice. As you would expect, over the years fasting has developed into fine art. These different fasts have different rules and different purposes.
Just as one example of the development of a fast over the years. Catholics, Episcopalians, and other Protestant Church that follow liturgical forms of worship, practice what is known as Lent. I follow the liturgy and Lent afar off. (There is a lot of movement among Baptist to adopt the Liturgical Calendar.) But Lent is a Fast associated with a period of time before Good Friday, the day Christ was Crucified.
Let me quote from an encyclopedia about Lent and its development:
Lent, period of fasting and penitence traditionally observed by Christians in preparation for Easter. The length of the Lenten fast, during which observants eat sparingly, was established in the 4th century as 40 days. In the Eastern churches, where both Saturdays and Sundays are regarded as festival days, the period of Lent is the eight weeks before Easter; in the Western churches, where only Sunday is regarded as a festival, the 40-day period begins on Ash Wednesday and extends, with the omission of Sundays, to the day before Easter. The observance of fasting or other forms of self-denial during Lent varies within Protestant and Anglican churches. These bodies emphasize penitence. The Roman Catholic Church has in recent years relaxed its laws on fasting. According to an apostolic constitution issued by Pope Paul VI in February 1966, fasting and abstinence during Lent are obligatory only on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
While, as I said, I follow the liturgy afar off, I do not condemn the practice. I just pray that one practices it with a pure conscience and not for show.
But the fast I want to talk about in this message is the fast of God’s choice. The fast that God chooses is a fast that ministers to people in need. The title of this message is Ministry Through Fasting or The Fast of God's Choice.
The authority for this message is found in two passages: Isaiah 58:1-11 and Matthew 25:31-40
One of our texts is Isa 58:1-11. I want read verses 5-11 with some comments as I go:
5Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself?....
We must be lead by God in our fasting practices. We need to make sure the fast we choose is the fast of God’s choice for us.
….Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?
Sounds like Isaiah is warning about the kind of fasting that Jesus warned about. Listen to Jesus again:
whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting.  Matthew 6:16
    Isaiah continues in Isa 58:6
6Is not this the fast that I choose:....
The fast that Isaiah describes is a fast of ministering to people in need.
….to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
The fast of God’s choice is not self-denigration, putting ourselves down. The fast of God’s choice is lifting others up.
Isaiah’s definition of the fast of God’s choice reminds me of what Jesus said when He gave us God's standard of judgment when He comes again in Matthew 25:34-40 (NRSV)
the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’
Isaiah tells us that there are benefits to fasting the fast of God’s Choice. Let us continue in Isa. 58:8
8Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. 9Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, 10if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. 11The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.
It is in our own best interest to put the interests of others ahead of our own. Ministering to others through fasting is highly rewarding.
Listen to the Lord Jesus bless those who serve others altruistically, that is with no thought for themselves:
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Matt 25:34-36
Many small Churches are frustrated because they feel they can’t do much for the Kingdom of Christ. But I am sure there is more we can do than we think.
One of the great contributions of Baptists to the whole of Christianity is their method of cooperation. Baptist took the early Church as a model for cooperation with each other. Let us look at two examples. Acts 15:2-5 (NRSV)
2And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to discuss this question with the apostles and the elders.
This is an example of Church cooperating in problem solving. And together they offered the following solution:
    Acts 15:22-28 (NRSV)
22Then the apostles and the elders, with the consent of the whole church, decided to choose men from among their members and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers, 23with the following letter: “The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the believers of Gentile origin in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. 24Since we have heard that certain persons who have gone out from us, though with no instructions from us, have said things to disturb you and have unsettled your minds, 25we have decided unanimously to choose representatives and send them to you, along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26who have risked their lives for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose on you no further burden than these essentials:

Another example of the early Church cooperating with many churches is taking an offering for a need for poor people at Jerusalem.
    1 Corinthians 16:1 (NRSV)
1Now concerning the collection for the saints: you should follow the directions I gave to the churches of Galatia.
    Romans 15:26 (NRSV)
26for Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to share their resources with the poor among the saints at Jerusalem.
But concerning the collection which is for the saints. What saints were intended was already known to the Corinthians. Instead of for the saints, in  we have the more definite expression, “for the poor of the saints who are in Jerusalem,” The Christians living at Jerusalem, we may naturally suppose, were greatly straitened; as the enmity of their countrymen to the Gospel of Christ led them to treat those who professed it with cruelty, and spoil them of their goods; and the apostle hereby teaches that it was the duty of one Christian congregation to help another when in distress.

    PHARISAIC AMBITION

The Pharisaic spirit still haunts every child of Adam today. It is easy to be critical of Christ's contemporaries and miss the repetition of their vainglory in ourselves. Yet deeply ingrained in our fallen nature is this thirst for the praise of men. It seems to be a devilish perversion of our basic psychological need to be wanted and to be loved. We hunger for applause, fish for compliments, thrive on flattery. It is the plaudits of men we want; we are not content with God's approval now or with his 'Well done, good and faithful servant' on the last day. Yet, as Calvin put it: 'What is more foolish, nay, what is more brutish, than to prefer the paltry approval of men to the judgment of God?'(1)

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

            Friday, November 1, 2013 - 7:57 AM
Three women escaped from prison....one was a goober.

They ran for miles until they came upon an old barn, so they decided to hide in the hayloft and rest. When they climbed up, they found three gunnysacks and decided to put them over their heads for camouflage.

About an hour later the sheriff and his deputy came into the barn. The sheriff told his deputy to go up and check out the hayloft.

When he got up there, the sheriff asked him what he saw. The deputy told him, Just three gunnysacks. The sheriff told him to find out what was in them.... so the deputy kicked the first bag, which had the first escapee in it, and she went "Bow-wow," so the deputy told the sheriff there was a dog in the first one.

Then he kicked the one with the second escapee in it and she went "Meow."
The deputy told the sheriff there was a cat in the second one.

Then he kicked the one with the goober in it and there was no sound at all, so he kicked it again and the goober said "Potatoes."
