LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

My husband and I took our two-year-old daughter to the home-improvement store.

Madison got tired of walking, so my husband let her ride on his shoulders.  As he walked, Madison began pulling his hair.  Although he asked her to stop several times, she kept on.

Getting annoyed, he scolded, "Madison!  Stop that!"

"But, Daddy," she replied, "I'm just trying to get my gum back."

WHAT DOES TO MEAN TO BE A CHRISTIAN?

The New Testament definition of a Christian is a person 'in
Christ'.  It is necessary to insist, therefore, that
according to Jesus and his apostles to be a Christian is
not just to have been baptized, to belong to the church, to
receive holy communion, to believe in the doctrines of the
creed or to try to follow the standards of the Sermon on
the Mount.  Baptism and holy communion, church membership,
creed and conduct are all part and parcel of living as a
Christian, but they can form and sometimes have formed an
empty casket from which the jewel has disappeared.  The
jewel is Jesus Christ himself.  To be a Christian is
primarily to live in union with Jesus Christ, as a result
of which baptism, belief and behaviour slot naturally into
    place.. JOHN STOTT

"There are many of us that are willing to do great things for the Lord, but few of us are willing to do little things."* Dwight L. Moody

He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."  Mark 12:41-44 (NRSV)

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

A pastor and two of his deacons are out on the river fishing in their rowboat.  Twelve o'clock rolls around, and one of the deacons notices a nice spot on the bank to have lunch.  He turns to the others and says, "That looks like a nice spot for lunch.  What do you say we have lunch over there?"

The other deacon agrees, and so does the pastor.  The deacon stands up in the boat, steps out onto the river and walks over to the bank.  The pastor looks on with amazement, and thinks to himself, if his deacon is holy enough to walk on water, surely he can.

The other deacon stands up, picks up the picnic basket, steps out of the boat, and walks over to the bank and sits with the first deacon.  Again, to his amazement, the pastor thinks again, if his second deacon is holy enough to walk on water, surely he can.

The pastor stands up, steps out of the boat, and sinks into the water.  The first deacon turns to the second and says, "Think we should have told him where the rocks are?"

LAUGHTER DOES GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE!

A cowboy, who just moved to Wyoming from Oklahoma , walks into a bar and orders three mugs of Bud. He sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of eachone in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more.

The bartender approaches and tells the cowboy, "You know, a mug goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you bought one at a time."

The cowboy replies, "Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in Arizona , the other is in Colorado . When we all left our home in Oklahoma , we promised that
we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I'm drinking one beer for each of my brothers and one for myself."

The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there.

The cowboy becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. He orders three mugs and drinks them in turn.

One day, he comes in and only orders two mugs. All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender
says, "I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss."

The cowboy looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in his eyes and he laughs.

"Oh, no, everybody's just fine," he explains, "It's just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking."

    "Hasn't affected my brothers though."

    LAW AND LIBERTY

Christian liberty is not inconsistent with law any more than love is.  True, Christians are not 'under law' in that our salvation does not depend on obedience to the law.  Yet this does not relieve us of the obligation to keep the law.  The freedom with which Christ has made us free is not freedom to break the law, but freedom to keep it.  'I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought your precepts' (Ps. 119:45). The mother said to the little boy, "It's not appropriate to say the word 'pee' in church.  So, from now on whenever you have to 'pee' just tell me that you have to 'whisper'."

The following Sunday, the little boy went to church with his Father and during the service said to his father, "Daddy, I have to whisper."

The Father looked at him and said, "Okay, why don't you whisper in my ear."

    Letter and Spirit

Is the law still binding upon the Christian?  The answer to that is, No and Yes!  'No' in the sense that our acceptance before God does not depend on it.  Christ in his death fully met the demands of the law, so that we are delivered from it.  It no longer has any claims on us.  It is no longer our lord.  'Yes' in the sense that our new life is still a bondage.  We still 'serve'.  We are still slaves, although discharged from the law.  But the motive and the means of our service have altered.  Why do we serve?  Not because the law is our master and we have to, but because Christ is our husband and we want to.  Not because obedience to the law leads to salvation, but because salvation leads to obedience to the law.  The law says, Do this and you will live.  The gospel says, You live, so do this.  The motive has changed.  How do we serve?  Not in oldness of letter, but in newness of spirit.  That is, not by obedience to an external code, but by surrender to an indwelling Spirit.

    LAW-DODGING

What is the righteousness to which Christians are summoned?  It is a deep inward righteousness of the heart where the Holy Spirit has written God's law.  It is new fruit exhibiting the newness of the tree, new life burgeoning from a new nature.  So we have no liberty to try to dodge or duck the lofty demands of the law.  Law-dodging is a pharisaic hobby; what is characteristic of Christians is a keen appetite for righteousness, hungering and thirsting after it continuously.  And this righteousness, whether expressed in purity, honesty or charity, will show to whom we belong.  Our Christian calling is to imitate not the world, but the Father.  And it is by this imitation of him that the Christian counter-culture becomes visible. They looked out and saw the bear chasing the boy. Just as he got to the door they opened it and he stepped aside and the bear went in. He slammed the door and locked it and shouted. "OK skin him I'll go and get the other one".

    Paul's Attitude To the Law!

From Romans 7 we may summarize three possible attitudes to the law, the first two of which Paul rejects, and the third of which he commends. We might call them 'legalism', 'antinomianism' and 'law-fulfilling freedom'. *Legalists* are 'under the law' and in bondage to it. They imagine that their relationship to God depends on their obedience to the law, and they are seeking to be both justified and sanctified by it. But they are crushed by the la...w's inability to save them. *Antimonians* (or libertines) go to the opposite extreme. Blaming the law for their problems, they reject it altogether, and claim to be rid of all obligation to its demands. They have turned liberty into licence. *Law-fulfilling free people* preserve the balance. They rejoice both in their freedom from the law for justification and sanctification, and in their freedom to fulfil it. They delight in the law as the revelation of God's will (verse 22), but recognize that the power to fulfil it in not in the law but in the Spirit. Thus legalists fear the law and are in bondage to it. Antimonians hate the law and repudiate it. Law-abiding free people love the law and fulfil it. JOHN STOTT

    THOUGHT FOR TODAY!

PRAISE GOD! He woke me up this morning thinking about the Kingdom of God He is building. To enter His Kingdom we first submit to the King. Second, when we submit to the King by faith and repentance He begins a process in us called Salvation. We are born again. He begins a new creation in us which He faithfully and continually constructs until we become like Jesus.*

*46  "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I tell you?
    Luke 6:46 (NRSV)

3  Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above."
    John 3:3 (NRSV)

16  "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
    John 3:16 (NRSV)

8  But what does it say? "The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9  because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10  For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. Romans 10:8-10 (NRSV)

6  I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.

SANCTITY OF LIFE FROM THE WOMB TO THE TOMB

On Jan 21, I read in Janet's Blog (Denison Forum) the following quote of Pope Francis:

Last week, in his annual address to the Vatican diplomatic corps, the pope used a phrase that resonated with truth. Pope Francis said that abortion was "horrific" and part of a new 'throwaway culture.' He said that this culture wastes life as easily as it wastes food.  He then said, "It is frightful even to think that there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day." Quoted from Jan's Blog on Denison's Forum.

I responded in the comments section: Doyle Purifoy

I, too, welcome the Pope's words. Every life is precious. But our society promptly forgets the value of life, the sanctity of life, after the baby is born and denies that health care is a right to life, also.”

I suspect that there much hypocrisy in the abortion – health care issues. Many oppose abortion, not that they hold life so sacred but because they don't want their money in taxes to go to abortion. Many of these same people oppose universal health care, the Affordable Care Act, and the expansion of Medicaid and Medicare because they don't want to spend their taxes on the sanctity of life for adults, young or old. Money drives many people to oppose abortion and universal health care. There are many people who do not oppose universal health care because of the sanctity of life but because of the 'sanctity of money'.

    SECURE IN GRACE!

Justified believers enjoy a blessing far greater than a periodic approach to God or an occasional audience with the king. We are privileged to live in the temple and in the palace ... Our relationship with God, into which justification has brought us, is not sporadic but continuous, not precarious but secure. We do not fall in and out of grace like courtiers who may find themselves in and out of favour with their sovereign, or politicians with the public. No, we *stand* in it, for that is the nature of grace. Nothing can separate us from God's love (Rom. 8:38f.). JOHN STOTT

    The source of salvation

Although 'grace' and 'peace' are common monosyllables, they are pregnant with theological substance.  In fact, they summarize Paul's gospel of salvation.  The nature of salvation is peace, or reconciliation -- peace with God, peace with men, peace within.  The source of salvation is grace, God's free favour, irrespective of any human merit or works, his loving-kindness to the undeserving.  And this grace and peace flow from the Father and the Son together. Rabbit resuscitation... A man was driving along the highway, and saw a rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road and got out to see what had become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful he began to cry. A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. "I feel terrible," he explained. "I accidentally hit this rabbit and killed it." The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. She went to he car trunk and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead rabbit, and sprayed the contents of the can onto the rabbit. Miraculously, the rabbit came to life, jumped up, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. 50 meters away the rabbit stopped, turned around, waved at the two again, hopped down the road another 50 meters, turned, waved, and hopped another 50 meters. The man was astonished. He couldn't figure out what substance could be in the woman's spray can! He ran over to the woman and demanded, " What was in your spray can? What did you spray onto that rabbit?" The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: " 'Hare Spray' Restores Life to Dead Hare. Ads Permanent Wave."

    GRACE AND FAITH

Grace is 'the free and unmerited favour of God'. It is Paul's word to describe the loving, undeserved initiative of God in giving Christ to die, raising him from the dead and revealing him to sinners. His whole message became 'the word of his grace' (Acts 14:3) and 'the good news of the grace of God' (Acts 20:24). 'The grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men' (Tit. 2:11). It is supremely manifested in the provision and offer of salvation. B...y 'salvation' Paul is using a word with the broadest possible concept. It includes the past, the present and the future. It describes God's liberation of man from all the ravages of sin in the conscience, the mind, the heart, the will and the body; in his relation to God, the world and himself. To use Paul's own words, it comprises the believer's justification (his acceptance before God), sanctification (his growth in holiness), edification (his life in the church) and glorification (his perfection in the eternal glory). Or more simply, it makes his a son and a saint, a brother and an heir. Such is the grace of Christ received by faith. The only function of faith is to respond to grace. Faith takes what grace offers. JOHN STOTT

I have five siblings, three sisters and two brothers.

One night I was chatting with my Mom about how she had changed as a mother from the first child to the last.

She told me she had mellowed a lot over the years:

"When your oldest sister coughed or sneezed, I called the ambulance.

When your youngest brother swallowed a dime, I just told him it was coming out of his allowance."

It was the toughest experience of my life.

First, I got angina pectoris and then arteriosclerosis.  Just as I was recovering from these, I got tuberculosis, double pneumonia and phthisis.

    Appendicitis was followed by tonsillectomy.

These gave way to aphasia and hypertrophic cirrhosis.  I completely lost my memory for a while.  I know I had diabetes and acute ingestion, besides gastritis, rheumatism, lumbago and neuritis.

Realizing that perhaps I might do better with another doctor, I made an appointment at new medical office.  The receptionist had me fill out forms that included my medical history.

I don't know how I pulled through it.  It was the hardest spelling test I've ever had.

Tom was so excited about his promotion to Vice President of the company he worked for and kept bragging about it to his wife for weeks on end.

Finally she couldn't take it any longer, and told him, "Listen, it means nothing, they even have a vice president of peas at the grocery store!"

"Really?" he said.  Not sure if this was true or not, Tom decided to call the grocery store.

A clerk answers and Tom says, "Can I please talk to the Vice President of peas?"

The clerk replies, "Canned or frozen?"

In the back woods of Gooberland, you don't see too many people hang-gliding.

Ol' Zeek, however, decided to save up and bought himself a hang-glider. He took it to the highest mountain and after struggling to the top got ready to take flight. Running to the very edge he jumped off into the wind.

Meanwhile, Ma & Pa Hicks were sitting on the porch swing talking bout the good old days when Ma spotted the biggest bird she ever seen!

"Look at the size of that bird, Pa!" she exclaimed.

Paw rose up,"Git my gun, Ma."

Ma ran into the house and brought out his pump action shotgun.

He took careful aim and BANG...BANG.....BANG.....BANG! The monster size bird continued to sail silently over the tree tops.

"I think ya missed him, Pa." Ma said.

"Yeah," he replied, "but at least he let go of ol' Zeek!"

To tell the weather, go to your back door and look for the dog.

If the dog is at the door and he is wet, it's probably raining.

But if the dog is standing there really soaking wet, it is probably raining really hard.

If the dog's fur looks like it's been rubbed the wrong way, it's probably windy.

If the dog has snow on his back, it's probably snowing.

Of course, to be able to tell the weather like this, you have to leave the dog outside all the time, especially if you expect bad weather.

    Sincerely, The CAT

The moment you believed on Jesus Christ, you were joined to the Lord, united with God, His Spirit, and His people. You possess in embryo every organ, attribute, sense, sympathy, and affection: that is possessed by God Himself. These qualities are yours in rudimentary, embryonic, state subordinate to Jesus Christ, your Lord. These Characteristics will gradually grow into the very image of Jesus Christ: (I John 3:2) "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

An engineer, a psychologist, and a theologian were hunting in the wilderness of northern Canada. Suddenly, the temperature dropped and a furious snowstorm was upon them. They came across an isolated cabin, far removed from any town. The hunters had heard that the locals in the area were quite hospitable, so they knocked on the door to ask permission to rest.

No one answered their knocks, but they discovered the cabin was unlocked and they entered. It was a simple place ... 2 rooms with a minimum of furniture and household equipment. Nothing was unusual about the cabin except the stove. It was large, pot-bellied, and made of cast-iron. What was strange about it was its location ... it was suspended in midair by wires attached to the ceiling beams.

"Fascinating," said the psychologist. "It is obvious that this lonely trapper, isolated from humanity, has elevated this stove so that he can curl up under it and vicariously experience a return to the womb."

"Nonsense!" replied the engineer. "The man is practicing the laws of thermodynamics. By elevating his stove, he has discovered a way to distribute heat more evenly throughout the cabin."

"With all due respect," interrupted the theologian, "I'm sure that hanging his stove from the ceiling has religious meaning. Fire LIFTED UP has been a religious symbol for centuries."

The three debated the point for several hours without resolving the issue. When the trapper finally returned, they immediately asked him why he had hung his heavy pot-bellied stove from the ceiling.

His answer was succinct. "Had plenty of wire, not much stove pipe."

Two small county judges both got arrested for speeding on the same day. Rather than call the state Supreme Court for a visiting judge, each agreed to hear the other's case.

The first judge took the bench while the second stood at the defendant's table, and admitted his guilt. The sentencing judge immediately suspended both the fine and costs.

They switched places. The second judge admitted that he was speeding, too. Thereupon the first judge immediately fined him $250 and ordered him to pay court costs.

The second judge was furious. "I suspended your fine and costs, but you threw the book at me!", he fumed. The first judge looked at him and replied, "This is the second such case we've had in here today. Someone has to get tough about all this speeding!"

    LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST

In saying that saving faith includes obedience, I mean that in true faith there is an element of submission.  Faith is directed towards a Person.  It is in fact a complete commitment to this Person involving not only an acceptance of what is offered but a humble surrender to what is or may be demanded.  The bent knee is as much a part of saving faith as the open hand.
