          Just a simple place for me to put a scripture or two. My plan is to have one here a week or so. I was trying to do one a day, but think I need to go slower. Maybe I'll comment, maybe you will...

          Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)

          Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. (Acts 17:11)

          Test everything. Hold on to the good. (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

          Examine what I say, challenge me if I seem wrong, rebuke me if I am way off the mark...

    Romans 14:1-4, 19-21 (NIV)

    Romans 14:1-4

     1Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. 2One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. 4Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

    Romans 14:19-21

     19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.

     3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

    Psalm 38:21-22, 78:34-40 (NIV)

    Psalm 38:21-22

     21 O LORD, do not forsake me;
           be not far from me, O my God.

     22 Come quickly to help me,
           O Lord my Savior.

    Psalm 78:34-40

     34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek him;
           they eagerly turned to him again.

     35 They remembered that God was their Rock,
           that God Most High was their Redeemer.

     36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,
           lying to him with their tongues;

     37 their hearts were not loyal to him,
           they were not faithful to his covenant.

     38 Yet he was merciful;
           he forgave their iniquities
           and did not destroy them.
           Time after time he restrained his anger
           and did not stir up his full wrath.

     39 He remembered that they were but flesh,
           a passing breeze that does not return.

     40 How often they rebelled against him in the desert
           and grieved him in the wasteland!

    9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

    Acts 4:32-5:11 (NIV)

     32All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. 34There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.

     36Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), 37sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.

    Acts 5

     1Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet.

     3Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."

     5When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

     7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?"
          "Yes," she said, "that is the price."

     9Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."

     10At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

    22On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

    ...35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written:
       "For your sake we face death all day long;

    An attempt at encouragement

    I generally do not do this, but the pain of a fellow christian compells me, for this is the way I reach them.  If your anguish can reach me through the writing of words I must read with my own voice, how much more must our God be able to feel it?  Be at peace.  God goes with you!

    Luke 13:34 (NIV)

     34"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

    2 Samuel 23:5 (NIV)

     5 "Is not my house right with God?
           Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant,
           arranged and secured in every part?
           Will he not bring to fruition my salvation
           and grant me my every desire?

    Isaiah 42:3 (NIV)

     3 A bruised reed he will not break,
           and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
           In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;

    2 Timothy 2:11-13 (NIV)

     11Here is a trustworthy saying:
       If we died with him,
          we will also live with him;
     12if we endure,
          we will also reign with him.
       If we disown him,
          he will also disown us;
     13if we are faithless,
          he will remain faithful,
          for he cannot disown himself.

    Nehemiah 1:10 (NIV)

     10 "They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.

    Read the Book.  Get the whole story.  The story is this:  We do nothing outside salvation through Christ.  Our greatest works are but nothing.  If we can see the means to complete the task within our own meager inventory, we rely not upon the great strength and mighty hand of our Lord God.  It is not the success of this endeavor or that one that defines us, rather it is our willingness, in faith, to risk ridicule to attempt that which is clearly beyond us and to call on our God for help, for this is what he desires.  Only through the cleansing of the blood of his son Jesus are we even worthy to ask, and yet that is what he desires us to do.  So Christ had to come to make this so.  Embrace it.  Struggle with it.  Exhibit your faith even if you fail continuously, by trying again, and letting your thoughts dwell on where the power for any success actually comes from.  And the blessing will indeed be great.  Don't forget who you have to talk to, and who's plan it really has to be.  In other words:  Pray!

    Be Blessed,

    Mel
