WHY DID GOD WITHDRAW HIS PRESENCE WHEN HE SENT MOSES ON HIS WAY TO THE PROMISED LAND?

God was angry with the Israelites because of their behavior surrounding the golden calf that Aaron had made. So he struck the people with a plague. God instructed Moses to leave the region of Mount Sinai and go up to the promised land, the land that he promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God withdrew his presence but he was gracious to the people.

God said to Moses, I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way (Exod. 33: 2-3).

The people mourned when they heard what the Lord said to Moses.

As a believer, what can you learn from God’s dealing with the Israelites?

Shall not He who led me safely

Through the footsteps of this day

    Lead with equal understanding

All along my future way?  -Adams

WHAT DID THE ISRAELITES DO THAT DISPLEASED GOD AND WHAT WAS THE RESULT?

Moses went up Mount Sinai to receive the ten commandments from God. When the people saw that he was long in coming down, they said to Aaron, Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him (Exod. 32: 1).

Aaron answered them, Take off the gold earings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me (Exod. 32: 2).

Aaron took what they provided and made it into an idol in the shape of a calf.  The people gave credit to the idol for bringing them out of Egypt.

When Aaron saw the behavior of the people, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD (Exod. 32: 5).

The following day, early in the morning, the people sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterwards they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Then God said to Moses, Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt’ (Exod. 32: 7-8).

Then the LORD said to Moses that the people are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation (Exod. 32: 9-10).

Moses pleaded for the people and the LORD relented. He did not bring any disaster on them.

As a believer, what lesson can you learn from this?

Teach me, my God and King,

In all things Thee to see,

And what I do in anything,

To do it as for Thee!    - Herbert

HOW DID THE ISRAELITES ACCOMPLISH THE INTRICATE WORK FOR THE FURNISHINGS OF THE TABERNACLE?

After the LORD gave the ten commandments to the Israelites through Moses, he instructed Moses to tell the people to bring him an offering. These offerings were voluntary, as each ones heart prompted him to give. They included : gold, silver, bronze, yarn (blue, silver, scarlet), fine linen, goat hair, ram skins dyed red, hides of sea cows, acacia wood, olive oil, spices, onyx stones and other gems.

After the offerings were received, the people were to construct a sanctuary where God would dwell – Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you (Exod. 25: 8-9).

God chose Bezalel, of the tribe of Judah, and Oholiab, of the tribe of Dan, to be his assistant. God filled Bezalel with his Spirit with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of craft to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze. Also to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to perform all kinds of craftsmanship.

God also gave skills to all the craftsmen to make everything that he had commanded.

When God assigns tasks, he always gives those he has chosen the skills and ability to get the work accomplished. Just as God gave Bezalel, Oholiab and the craftsmen the skills that were required for the work in the tabernacle so He will equip you.

Please do not hesitate to respond to the call of God. He will prepare you adequately for the assignment.

ON MOUNT SINAI, WHAT WAS THE COVENANT THAT GOD MADE WITH THE ISRAELITES THROUGH MOSES?

After leaving Egypt, the Israelites traveled for three months and reached Rephidim. As they set out from Rephidim they entered the Desert of Sinai and camped in the desert in front of Mount Sinai.

Then Moses went up to God and God spoke to him from the mountain. ‘This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites  (Exod. 19: 3-6).

Moses went to the elders and the people and shared with them the words that God had spoken. The people all responded together, ‘We will do everything the Lord has said.’ Moses took their response to God  (Exod. 19: 8).

The Lord said to Moses, ‘I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.’ Moses told the Lord what the people said. The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people'  (Exod. 19: 10-11).

The Lord instructed Moses to caution the people not to go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. ‘Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death'  (Exod. 19: 12).

They were permitted to go up the mountain when the ram’s horn sounded a long blast.

A covenant may be unconditional or conditional. This covenant was conditional. For it to be effective, the Israelites had to obey God fully and keep the covenant.  As believers, God has called us to a life of obedience and trust (Prov. 3: 5-6).

HOW WAS THE PRIEST OF MIDIAN A BLESSING TO MOSES?

As a young man growing up in Egypt, Moses received the best of everything. He was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter and brought up in Pharaoh’s court. Moses was concerned about the harsh treatment that the Israelites were receiving as he watched them at their hard labor. One day he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew (Israelite) and he intervened. He killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

On hearing this, Pharaoh tried to kill Moses but Moses fled and went to live in Midian. While there he was married to Zipporah, one of the seven daughters of Reuel (Jethro), a priest of Midian.

When God called Moses to deliver the Israelites from the hands of the Egyptians, he responded positively after much excuses. As the Israelites were on their way to the promised land, Moses was heavily burdened by the workload he had in dealing with the problems of the people.

Jethro went out to meet Moses and he was delighted to hear about all the good things that the LORD had done for the Israelites. As Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, it lasted from morning till evening. When his father-in-law, Jethro, saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning to evening (Exod. 18: 14)?

Moses responded, Because the people come to me to seek God's will. Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God's decrees and laws (Exod. 18: 15).

Jethro told Moses what he was doing was not good. It would wear him out as well as the people. He advised him to teach the people the decrees and laws and show them how to live and the duties they were responsible to perform.  He told Moses that he should deal with the difficult cases and selected men will deal with the simple cases. Moses was to select trustworthy, Godly men and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.  If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied  (Exod. 18: 21-23).

Moses did everything his father-in-law recommended. After that, Jethro returned to Midian.

God used Jethro to be a blessing to Moses. God will use others to be a blessing to you. Look out for and be receptive to Godly advice. May you faithfully do the good works that God has prepared in advance for you to do (Eph. 2: 10).

WHAT DID THE ISRAELITES DO THAT ANGERED GOD AND WHAT WAS THE RESULT?

As the Israelites traveled  they grumbled against Moses and Aaron.  They said that in Egypt they ate all the food they wanted but Moses and Aaron brought them into the desert to starve them to death.

Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. … On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days’ (Exod. 16: 4-5).

When the rabble with them began craving other food, the Israelites began wailing again and said, If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost – also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna’ (Num. 11: 4-6).

When the people were wailing, the Lord became greatly angry and Moses was troubled. Moses asked the Lord where he could get meat for all the people. The Lord instructed Moses to tell the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat.’ … Moses said to the people, Now the Lord will give you meat, and you will eat it. You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, but for a whole month – until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it – because youhave rejected the Lord, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt’ (Num. 11: 18-20).

So the Lord sent out a wind and drove quail in from the sea. It brought them down all around the camp to about three feet above the ground, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers  (about 60 bushels or 2.2 kiloliters). Then they spread them out all around the camp.

But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague (Num. 11: 31-33).

What can believers learn from God’s dealing with the Israelites? Patience and self-control are fruit of the Spirit, let us practice them in our daily walk.

WHY DIDN’T MOSES AND AARON  ENTER THE PROMISED LAND?

Moses and Aaron were great servants of God, but what went wrong?

After leaving Egypt, the Israelites traveled from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim but there was no drinking water. As a result they quarreled with Moses. Moses cried out to the LORD and the LORD responded, Walk on ahead of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock of Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink (Exod. 17: 5-6).

Moses did as the LORD had instructed him.

On another occasion after traveling for some time, they arrived at Kadesh.  When they were there Miriam died and was buried. There was no water for the people and again they quarreled with Moses. Both Moses and Aaron sought the LORD and the glory of the LORD appeared to them. The LORD said to Moses, ‘Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink’ (Num. 20:  8).

Moses and Aaron gathered the people. But Moses, instead of speaking to the rock, rebuked the people, Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock? Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank (Num. 20: 10-11).

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them' (Num. 20: 12).

The disobedience of Moses and Aaron caused them not to have the privilege of leading the Israelites into the land of Canaan.

Believers can learn an important lesson here. If we do not obey God, there are consequences.

If you are not a believer, will you surrender your life to God by accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior? God is anxious to be your heavenly Father.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ISRAELITES WHEN THEIR WATER SUPPLY WAS BITTER?

When Moses led the Israelites from the Red Sea they traveled in the desert. They were not able to find water for three days. When they arrived at Marah, they found water. But they were not able to drink the water because it was bitter. As a result, the people grumbled against Moses. They said to him, What are we to drink (Exod. 15: 24).

Moses cried out to the Lord and God enabled him to solve their problem. The Lord showed Moses a piece of wood. When Moses threw the wood into the water, the water became sweet. The Israelites now had a supply of good drinking water.

The transformation of the water was a miracle. It was similar to the miracle that God enabled Moses to perform when he struck the water of the Nile with his staff and the water became blood (Exod. 7: 20).

What lesson did the Israelites learn? The same power that turned water into blood could turn bitter water into sweet.

What lesson could believers learn from the bitter water at Marah?

    When our problems overwhelm us,

    God wants us to look to Him;

    He provides the right solutions-

Lighting paths that once were dim. –Sper

The apostle Paul writing to the Corinthians stated, For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the sme spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ (1 Cor. 10: 1-4).

The rock that gushed out water for the Israelites was symbolic of Christ. Jesus gave them physical water. But Jesus is the living water. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4: 13-14).

Jesus said to the Jews, I tell you the truth before Abraham was born, I am (John 8: 58).

Jesus is eternal. JESUS IS GOD (John 1: 1-3, 10). He created the universe (Heb. 1: 1-2).

Will you receive him and become a child of God (John 1: 12).

Do you fear the gathering clouds of sorrow?

    Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus;

Are you anxious what shall be tomorrow?

Tell it to Jesus alone.  - Rankin

Judah was one of the twelve sons of Jacob. Tamar,  a Gentile woman, was married to Judah's firstborn son, Er. Er was a wicked man so the Lord put him to death.

Judah encouraged his second son, Onan to lie with his brother’s wife to produce children for him. This was the practice of the day. Onan knew that if Tamar conceived the offspring would not be his, so he saw to it that Tamar did not conceive. The Lord was displeased with Onan and He put him to death.

Judah promised Tamar that he would give her his youngest son, Shelah went he became of age. But Judah did not keep his promise.

As time went by Judah’s wife died. One day he traveled to Timnah where his workmen were shearing his sheep.

On hearing that Judah was traveling to Timnah, Tamar took off her widow’s clothes and disguised herself. Judah thinking that she was a prostitute asked her to have sex with him, not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law. She agreed. She conceived and had twin boys. Their names were Perez and Zerah.

Tamar was one of the four Gentile women who figured in the ancestry of Jesus through her son with Judah, whose name was Perez (see Matthew 1: 1-16).

The Moabites were idol worshippers. This nation came from Moab, the son of the older daughter of Lot from a sexual affair with her father whom she made drunk. But there is a recorded good that came from that nation.

Ruth was a Moabitess. She became the daughter-in-law of Naomi, who was an Ephrathite from Bethlehem, Judah. Naomi and her husband, along with their two sons, went to live in Moab when there was a famine in Bethlehem. Ruth was married to one of Naomi’s sons who later died. Naomi’s husband and her other son died as well (Ruth 1: 1-5).

Ruth accompanied her mother-in-law to Bethlehem when the famine was over (Ruth 1: 6-7).

Ruth was married to Boaz and their son’s name was Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse. Jesse was the father of David (Ruth 4: 13-21).

So God used Ruth, a Moabitess, to figure in the ancestry of JESUS, by becoming the great grandmother of King David.

Read the full story in THE BOOK OF RUTH.

GOD CAN USE YOU FOR HIS PURPOSE. PLEASE BE FAITHFUL TO HIS CALL (Prov. 3: 5-6).

What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt His tender mercy,

Who through life has been my Guide?

ARE JUDAISM, ISLAM AND JEHOVAH WITNESSES WRONG IN TEACHING THAT THERE IS ONE GOD (SINGULAR)?

In the Book of Genesis we read, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1: 1). The Hebrew word for God is Elohim. Elohim is a plural noun.

There is one GOD, who is God of Jews and Gentilrs (Rom. 3: 29-30).  Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one (Deut.6:4). There is one God but he is revealed in three persons - God the Father (Matt. 3:17), God the Son (John 1:18) and God the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 1:22; John 14:26).

GOD REFERS TO HIMSELF IN THE PLURAL

      1) Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,... (Gen. 1:26).

       2) The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil ... (Gen. 3:22).

       3) Come, let us go down and confuse their language so that they will not understand each other (Gen. 11:17).

       4) Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us  (Isa. 6:8).

In the New Testament, God reveals himself in three persons - God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3: 16-17).

      SCRIPTURAL CONCLUSION

We conclude that Judaism, Islam and Jehovah Witnesses are wrong in identifying God as one (singular). In the Book of Genesis, God says "let us" which denotes more than one. Although these groups  claim that they believe in the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy), their teaching is false.  As born again believers, we place our confidence in one God, revealed in three persons.

BIBLE STUDY - KNOW YOUR BIBLE

HOW DID GOD MANIFEST HIS POWER AND PRESENCE IN DEALING WITH PHARAOH AND THE ISRAELITES?

After Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites leave Egypt on a number of occasions, he was forced to do so by the mighty hand of God. God sent a plague on the firstborn of Egypt, firstborn son and firstborn  cattle. The plague did not affect the Israelites because God had instructed Moses what they should do to be spared from the plague – they were instructed to eat the Passover meal.

After the death of the firstborn Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron.. He said to them, Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me (Exod. 12: 32).

The Egyptians urged the Israelites to leave fearing that all the Egyptians will be killed. The Israelites left with silver, gold and clothing that were given to them by the Egyptians. This was because Moses had instructed the Israelites to ask for those items.

As the Israelites traveled, God  traveled with them. During the day God manifested himself in a pillar of cloud to guide them and in a pillar of fire at night so that they could travel in safety. The pillars of cloud and fire always traveled ahead of the Israelites.

Despite the death of the firstborn in Egypt, God hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he pursued the Israelites. God showed his power again by enabling the Israelites to cross over the sea on dry ground and rolling back the water to destroy all the Egyptians.

As believers, what can we learn from God’s dealing with the Egyptians and the Israelites. God will use his power and presence to take care of his people. Have you received Jesus Christ as your Savior? If you have, then your life is in God’s hand. If you haven’t, why not? God loves you and he wants to be your heavenly Father.

PLEASE READ THE STORY IN Exodus, chapters twelve, thirteen and fourteen.
