WHEN AARON DIED WHY WAS HIS THIRD SON MADE THE CHIEF PRIEST?

When Aaron died, God instructed Moses to make Eleazar, the third son of Aaron, the chief priest (Num. 20: 24-26).

Why was the third son made the chief priest? The reason was that the first two sons of Aaron were dead. How did they die?

The Scripture informs us about the sons of Aaron, Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD (Lev. 10: 1-2).

Moses then told Aaron what the LORD said, ‘Among those who approach me I will show myself holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored’ (Lev. 10: 3).

Moses ordered two of their cousins, Mishael and Elzaphan, to carry the dead bodies outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.

Moses instructed Aaron and his two remaining sons,Eleazar and Ithamar, Do not leave the entrance to the Tent of Meeting or you will die, because the LORD’S anointing oil  is on you’ (Lev. 10: 7).

Their relatives and the house of Israel were able to mourn for Nadab and Abihu.

    Obedience is better than sacrifice.

WHAT LED TO ELEAZAR BECOMING THE CHIEF PRIEST OF ISRAEL?

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron after the whole Israelite community arrived at Mount Hor, near the border of Edom.

God said, Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. Get Aaron and his son Eleazar and take them up Mount Hor. Remove Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar, for Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will die there (Num. 20: 24-26).

After Moses did what the Lord commanded, Aaron died on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. When the community learned that Aaron had died, the entire house of Israel mourned for him thirty days.

Moses and Aaron were faithful servants of God but their disobedience (at Meribah) resulted in them not entering the promised land.

    Obedience is better than sacrifice.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE TEACH ABOUT TITHING?

God gave the following commands to Moses on Mount Sinai for the Israelites, ‘A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord. If a man redeems any of his tithe, he must add a fifth of the value to it. The entire tithe of the herd and flock—every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod—will be holy to the Lord. He must not pick out the good from the bad or make any substitution. If he does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute become holy and cannot be redeemed’ (Lev. 27: 30-33).

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul stated, Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Cor. 9: 6-8).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12).

WHAT DOES WORK ON THE SABBATH INCLUDE?

The Sabbath observance was given to the Israelites on their journey from Egypt to the promised land. God spoke through Moses, You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy (Exod. 31: 13).

The Israelites were forbidden to work on the Sabbath.  The death penalty was the punishment (Exod. 31: 14). The Sabbath was a day of rest.

We do not have a list of the activities that were considered work but we have two specific examples.

    1)      They could not cook on the Sabbath. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning (Exod. 16: 23). They were able to cook on six days. They were to save food from the day before the Sabbath. The food that was saved did not spoil (Exod. 16: 24). In fact on the Sabbath there was no manna on the ground (Exod. 16: 25).

    2)   They could not gather wood on the Sabbath. While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.’ So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses (Num. 15: 32-36).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12).

HOW WAS AARON SELECTED FOR THE PRIESTHOOD?

God instructed Moses to speak to the Israelites. They were to present twelve staffs, one from the leader of each tribe. Each leader’s name was to be written on his staff. Aaron’s name was to be written on the staff of Levi.

Moses was told that the staffs were to be placed in the Tent of Meeting in front of the Testimony. It was there that God met with Moses.

God said to Moses, The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites (Num. 17: 5).

Moses did as the Lord had instructed him. The twelve staffs were placed in the Tent of Meeting.

The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony and he saw that Aaron’s staff had sprouted. Not only had the staff sprouted, it budded, blossomed and produced almonds. Moses brought out all the staffs to the Israelites. They looked at them and each leader took his staff.

Then God said to Moses, Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the Testimony, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die (Num. 17: 10).

Moses did as the Lord had commanded.

The Lord said to Aaron, You, your sons and your father’s family are to bear the responsibility for offenses against the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses against the priesthood. Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister before the Tent of the Testimony. They are to be responsible to you and are to perform all the duties of the Tent, but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die. They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the Tent of Meeting—all the work at the Tent—and no one else may come near where you are (Num. 18: 1-4).

God also said to Aaron, But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain. I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift. Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary must be put to death (Num. 18: 7).

God had a plan for Aaron's life. God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12).

HOW DID GOD DEAL WITH THE LEVITES WHO OPPOSED MOSES?

A group of Israelites, Levites, went to Moses and Aaron and said to them, You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD’S assembly (Numbers 16: 3).

Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram but they said, We will not come! Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert? And now you want to lord it over us (Numbers 16: 12-13).

Moses became very angry and complained to God. God wanted to put an end to the Israelites. He said to Moses and Aaron, Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once. But Moses and Aaron cried out to God and he relented (Numbers 16: 21).

God instructed Moses to have the assembly move away from the tents of the trouble makers, Korah, Dathan and Abiram. The assembly did as Moses had instructed them. Then Moses spoke to them concerning the trouble makers.

As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them (Dathan and Abiram) split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah’s men and all their possessions. They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, ‘The earth is going to swallow us too!’ (Numbers 16: 31-34)?

Please read the full account in the Book of Numbers, chapter 16.

WHAT WAS UNIQUE ABOUT JOSHUA AND CALEB?

God instructed Moses to send out men to explore the land of Canaan which He promised to give to the Israelites. Moses had to select one of the leaders from each ancestral tribe.

Moses sent out the following men from the Desert of Paran: Shammua from the tribe of Reuben, Shaphat from the tribe of Simeon, Caleb from the tribe of Judah, Igal from the tribe of Issachar, Hoshea from the tribe of Ephraim, Palti from the tribe of Benjamin, Gaddiel from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddi from the tribe of Manasseh (son of Joseph), Ammiel from the tribe of Dan, Sethur from the tribe of Asher, Nahbi from the tribe of Naphtali and Geuel from the tribe of Gad.

Please note that two leaders were sent out from the tribe of Joseph, representing his sons Ephraim and Manasseh.

No leader was sent out from the tribe of Levi, the priestly tribe.

After exploring the land they came back and reported to Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community. Ten of the men gave a negative report. But Joshua and Caleb reported favorably.

    The reports were as follows:

    1)   We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large … We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are (Numbers 13: 27-28, 31).

    2)   The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them (Numbers 14:7-9).

Of all the Israelites who left Egypt, only Joshua and Caleb who reported favorably had the privilege of entering the promised land.

Please read the story in the Book of Numbers, chapters 13 and 14.

WHAT OFFERINGS WERE MADE UNDER THE FIRST COVENANT? WHY WERE THEY OFFERED UP? WHAT WAS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE OFFERINGS?

    The offerings were:

    1)      The Burnt Offering

    2)      The Grain Offering

    3)      The Fellowship Offering or The Peace Offering

    4)      The Sin Offering

    5)      The Guilt Offering or The Trespass Offering

    Why were they offered up?

The offerings enabled the Israelites the opportunity to serve God in a way that was acceptable. Four offerings involved the shedding of blood. 1) The burnt offering 2) The fellowship offering 3) The sin offering 4) The guilt offering.

    What was the significance?

By presenting the offerings, the Israelites were constantly reminded that God had chosen them to be his holy people. The offerings kept the Israelites focused on the LORD. They involved the people in active service not lip service. But the offerings could not forgive sins. They simply covered sins. The forgiveness of the sins committed under the first covenant had to wait until the New Covenant was established.

    THE NEW COVENANT

We read, For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant (Heb. 9: 15).

I am resolved to follow the Savior,

    Faithful and true each day;

Heed what He sayeth, do what He willeth—

    He is the living way.

ARE THE SABBATH REGULATIONS STILL IN EFFECT?

Moses said to the Israelite community, These are the things the LORD has commanded you to do (Exod. 35: 1).

    1)      Work for six days but do not work on the seventh day. The seventh day will be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD.

    2)      Whoever does any work on the Sabbath must be put to death.

    3)      Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on your holy day.

The Sabbath regulations were given to the Israelites under the first covenant but the first covenant became obsolete (Heb. 8: 13). Therefore the Sabbath regulations are no longer in effect.

We read in the Book of Colossians, Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ (Col. 2: 16-17).

The apostle Paul wrote to the Galatians, Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing - if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard (Gal. 3: 3-5).

“Nothing is stronger than strength under God’s control.”

We strive to do the will of God

    And struggle to succeed;

But we may fail to recognize

God’s strength is what we need.

WHY WAS A SECOND SET OF STONE TABLETS NECESSARY?

When God was finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God (Exod. 31: 18).

Moses went down the mountain with the two tablets. On both sides of the tablets there were inscriptions.

As Moses neared the camp and saw the golden calf and his people dancing, he became angry and he threw the tablets out of his hands. They were broken to pieces.

The next day Moses went back to the Lord and confessed the sin of the people. The Lord said to Moses, Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke (Exod. 34: 1).

Moses did as the Lord had instructed him. The next day, early in the morning, he went up Mount Sinai. Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating or drinking. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD  (Exod. 34: 29).
