HOW WAS REJOICING FOLLOWED BY TRAGEDY AND BY REJOICING AGAIN?

The widow of Zarephath provided Elijah with a place to sleep and food to eat. Some time later the widow’s son died.

She said to Elijah, What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son (1 Kings 17: 18).

Elijah asked her for the boy. She gave her son to him and he took the child to the room where he was staying and laid him on his bed.

Elijah cried out to the Lord, O Lord my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die? Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the Lord, ‘O Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him’ (1 Kings 17: 20-21)!

The Lord answered Elijah’s cry and life returned to the boy’s body. Elijah carried the child and gave him to his mother. The widow said to Elijah, Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth (1 Kings 17: 24).

HOW WAS ELIJAH SUPERNATURALLY CARED FOR A SECOND TIME?

Elijah left the ravine of Kerith after the water in the brook had dried up. God said to him, Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food (1 Kings 17: 9).

When he arrived at the town he met a widow who was gathering sticks. He asked her for a drink of water and a piece of bread. She said that she did not have any bread. All that she had at home was a handful of flour and a little oil. She said to Elijah that she was gathering some sticks to take home and make a meal for her son and herself so that they could eat and then die.

Elijah said to her, Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land’ (1 Kings 17: 13-14).

The widow did what she was asked to do. As a result there was food every day for the widow and her family as well as for Elijah.

DID GOD FULFILL HIS PROMISE OF LAND TO ISRAEL IN OLD TESTAMENT TIMES?

God made a covenant with Abraham concerning land that he would give to the Israelites. He said, To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates—the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites (Gen. 15: 18-21).

There are those who claim that Israel never possessed the land that was promised and that the promised land will be theirs in the future.

    But this claim is unscriptural.

We read in Scripture, The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy. And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River (Euphrates) to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These countries brought tribute and were Solomon’s subjects all his life (1 Kings 4: 20-21).
