So as not to cause my Brother to fall...
1 Corinthians 8 (NIV) 1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that we all possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. 3But the man who loves God is known by God. 4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. 7But not everyone knows this. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat such food they think of it as having been sacrificed to an idol, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do. 9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol's temple, won't he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.
On Harry Potter, this would be my reason not to read or buy the books: The Author said that the Headmaster was Gay. If I do these things, I make Gayness out as OK. It is not. If she lied and this is just a publicity stunt, it remains the same for me. Sharon says she sees nothing redeeming. That was also enough for me personally. The fact is, I can not condemn anyone for reading or buying it, but I can speak strongly to the idea that it might not be best and I do consider it wrong. This is a change in my previous opinion where I thought the only (or at least strongest) grounds it was objectionable was because it was about magic as being the subject matter. InTruth, Mel

One not for my children yet...
I am going to make this short, so I can get to bed. It was story telling time, Thanksgiving, I think, and I was a young impressionable child full of mischief. The adults were telling stories about when they were kids and enjoying the memories. Us youngsters were running around and having fun. A story came up about something my dad did to my grandfather when he was quite young. The adults all roared with laughter, and unfortunately, I had heard what was done and was soooo funny.
I thought I was going to get the beating of my life. Fortunately, my father figured out where the idea came from before he reached me, and I was granted mercy, albeit with a strict explanation of why everything that is funny now may not be funny then and the intricacies of memories gone by... You see, my father wore slippers, as did his father. I did to him what he had done to his father and left something warm, personal, smelly and somewhat gross and crude in his slippers. Kids think fecal matter is funny. Don't ask me why, but even when they know it is "eeewwy pooey" there is something that is amusing about abusing it. Even little girls, it seems, so this is one I am trying to avoid my daughters hearing until they are quite a bit older... Shhh!!! ;'{P
