Romans 13
Romans 13
A disciple respects authority.
1Every
person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no
authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2Therefore
whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have
opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3For
rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to
have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the
same; 4for
it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid;
for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an
avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5Therefore
it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for
conscience’ sake. 6For because of this you
also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to
this very thing. 7Render to all what is due
them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear;
honor to whom honor (NASB)
A disciple loves others.
8Owe
nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has
fulfilled the law. 9For this, “YOU SHALL NOT
COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT
COVET,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying,
“YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 10Love
does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the
law. (NASB)
A disciple puts away the desires of the flesh.
11Do
this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from
sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. 12The
night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds
of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13Let
us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in
sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 14But
put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its
lusts. (NASB)

Romans 12
Romans 12
A disciple does not conform to this world instead he
offers his body as a living sacrifice to God.
1Therefore
I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living
and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service
of worship. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will
of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect (NASB)
A disciple is humble and uses the gifts God has
given him to bring glory to God.
3For
by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself
more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each
according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4For as in one
body we have many members, and the
members do not all have the same function, 5so we, though
many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6Having
gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if
prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7if service, in
our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8the one who
exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one
who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. (ESV)
A disciple loves others, he hates evil and holds
fast to what is good. He rejoices in
hope and is patient in tribulation. He
prays constantly and he helps others and shows hospitality to others.
9Let
love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10Love
one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11Do
not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice
in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13Contribute to
the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. (ESV)
A disciple loves his enemies and does not seek
vengeance instead he lives in humility and harmony with others.
14Bless
those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with
those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony
with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never
be wise in your own sight. 17Repay no one
evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18If
possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19Beloved,
never avenge yourselves, but leave itto
the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the
Lord.” 20To
the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him
something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21Do
not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (ESV)

Romans 8
Romans 8
A disciple lives in the Spirit.
1Therefore
there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law
of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and
of death. 3For
what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did:
sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering
for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4so that the
requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to
the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5For those
who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but
those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6For the
mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and
peace, 7because
the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself
to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8and those
who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9However,
you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells
in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to
Him. 10If
Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is
alive because of righteousness. 11But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the
dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give
life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
12So then,
brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the
flesh— 13for
if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit
you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all
who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15For you
have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have
received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16The
Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if
children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we
suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. (NASB)
Nothing
can separate the child of God from the love of God.
31What shall we
then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against
us? 32He
that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not
with him also freely give us all things? 33Who shall lay
any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34Who
is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that
is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh
intercession for us.
35Who
shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or
distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36As
it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as
sheep for the slaughter.
37Nay,
in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38For
I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities,
nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor
depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of
God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
