Matthew 25
Matthew 25
A disciple is prepared for the return of Christ.
1“Then
the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.2Five
of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them,
4but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.
6But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to
meet him.’ 7Then
all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8And
the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are
going out.’ 9But
the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you,
go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who
were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.
11Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to
us.’ 12But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. (ESV)
A disciple uses what God has given
him to bring glory to God.
14“For
it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants
and entrusted to them his property. 15To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability.
Then he went away. 16He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with
them, and he made five talents more. 17So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and
hid his master’s money. 19Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled
accounts with them. 20And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five
talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have
made five talents more.’ 21His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.
Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master,
you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.’ 23His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You
have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy
of your master.’ 24He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying,
‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and
gathering where you scattered no seed, 25so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here
you have what is yours.’ 26But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You
knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed?
27Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my
coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten
talents. 29For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an
abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
30And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (ESV)

Matthew 19
Matthew 19
A disciple honors marriage.
3Some
Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, “Is it lawful for a man
to divorce his wife for any reason at all?” 4And
He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from
the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, 5and
said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO
HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’? 6“So
they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together,
let no man separate.” 7They
said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND
SEND her AWAY?” 8He
said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce
your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9“And
I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries
another woman commits adultery.” (NASB)
A disciple doesn’t let anything come between him and
following Christ.
16And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher,
what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” 17And
He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only
One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18Then
he said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU
SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE
WITNESS; 19HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL
LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 20The
young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”
21Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be
complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22But
when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one
who owned much property.
23And
Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to
enter the kingdom of heaven. 24“Again
I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than
for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 25When
the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who
can be saved?” 26And
looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but
with God all things are possible.”
27Then
Peter said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then
will there be for us?” 28And
Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the
regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also
shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29“And
everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or
children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will
inherit eternal life. 30“But
many who are first will be last; and the last, first. (NASB)

Matthew 18
Matthew 18
A disciple is humble.
1At
that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the
kingdom of heaven?” 2And calling to
him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you
will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Whoever
humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (ESV)
A disciple does not lead others
into temptation and sin.
6but
whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be
better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be
drowned in the depth of the sea. 7“Woe
to the world for temptations to sin!For it is necessary that
temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! (ESV)
A disciple put those things that
cause him to sin out of his life.
8And
if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It
is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two
feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. 9And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It
is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown
into the hellof
fire. (ESV)
A disciple forgives others.
21Then
Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me,
and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22Jesus said to
him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Matthew 10
Matthew 10
A disciple does not fear man instead he fears God and
proclaims His name before the world.
26“So
have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or
hidden that will not be known. 27What
I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim
on the housetops. 28And
do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him
who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are
not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground
apart from your Father. 30But
even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31Fear
not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32So
everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my
Father who is in heaven, 33but
whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in
heaven. (ESV)
A disciple loves God more than
anything in this world and is willing to take up his cross and give his life
for Christ.
34“Do
not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to
bring peace, but a sword. 35For
I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36And
a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37Whoever
loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son
or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38And
whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever
finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find
it. (ESV)
