Luke 18
Luke 18
A disciple is a humble person.
9He also told this
parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated
others with contempt:10“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and
the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayedthus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like
other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week; I give
tithes of all that I get.’ 13But the tax collector,
standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his
breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14I tell you, this man went down
to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself
will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (ESV)
A
disciple lets nothing hold him back from following Christ.
18And a ruler asked
him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not
murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the
poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he
was extremely rich.24Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!25For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a
rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed
you.” 29And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or
wife or brothersor parents or children, for the sake of the
kingdom of God, 30who will not receive many
times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.” (ESV)

Luke 17
Luke 17
A disciple does not lead others into temptation and
sin.
1And he said to his
disciples, “Temptations to sinare sure to come, but woe to the one through
whom they come! 2It would be better for him if
a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that
he should cause one of these little ones to sin. (ESV)
A
disciple forgives others.
3Pay attention to yourselves!
If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4and if he sins against you
seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you
must forgive him.” (ESV)
A
disciple serves without seeking award or recognition.
7“Will any one of you who has a
servantplowing or keeping sheep say to him when he
has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? 8Will he not rather say to him,
‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink,
and afterward you will eat and drink’? 9Does he thank the servant
because he did what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have
done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only
done what was our duty.’” (ESV)

Luke 14
Luke 14
A disciple is humble.
7Now he told a
parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of
honor, saying to them,8“When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not
sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be
invited by him, 9and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give
your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the
lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so
that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you
will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who
humbles himself will be exalted.” (ESV)
A
disciple is ready to give up all to follow Christ.
25Now large crowds
were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, 26“If anyone comes to
Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and
brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27“Whoever does not
carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28“For which one of
you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the
cost to see if he has enough to complete it? 29“Otherwise, when he
has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to
ridicule him, 30saying, ‘This man
began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31“Or what king, when
he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and
consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against
him with twenty thousand?32“Or else, while the
other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33“So then, none of
you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

Luke 12
Luke 12
A disciple fears God and no one and nothing else.
4“I tell you, my friends, do
not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they
can do. 5But I will warn you whom to
fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes,
I tell you, fear him! 6Are not five sparrows sold for
two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7Why, even the hairs of your
head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
(ESV)
A
disciple acknowledges Christ before all and he does not blaspheme the Holy
Spirit and he allows the Holy Spirit to guide him in trials.
8“And I tell you, everyone who
acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the
angels of God, 9but the one who denies me
before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10And everyone who speaks a word
against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the
Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11And when they bring you before
the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how
you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12for the Holy Spirit will teach
you in that very hour what you ought to say.” (ESV)
A
disciple avoids covetousness and lays up heavenly treasure not earthly treasure.
13Someone in the
crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with
me.” 14But he said to him, “Man,
who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for
one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have
nowhere to store my crops?’18And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and
build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many
years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required
of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not
rich toward God.” (ESV)
A
disciple is not anxious and does not worry instead he seeks the Kingdom of
God.
22And he said to his
disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life,
what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have
neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are
you than the birds! 25And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to
his span of life? 26If then you are not able to do
as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27Consider the lilies, how they
grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory
was not arrayed like one of these. 28But if God so clothes the
grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,
how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29And do not seek what you are
to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30For all the nations of the
world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you
32“Fear not, little flock, for
it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions, and
give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with
a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no
moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is,
there will your heart be also. (ESV)
A
disciple is ready and waiting for the return of the Lord.
35“Stay dressed for actionand keep your lamps burning, 36and be like men who are waiting for their
master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to
him at once when he comes and knocks. 37Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he
comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them
recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38If he comes in the second watch, or in
the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39But know this, that if the master of the
house had known at what hour the thief was coming, hewould not have left his house to be
broken into. 40You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at
an hour you do not expect.”
41Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or
for all?” 42And
the Lord said, “Who
then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his
household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43Blessed is that servantwhom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44Truly, I say to you, he will set him over
all his possessions.45But if that servant says to himself, ‘My
master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants,
and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46the master of that servant will come on a
day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut
him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. 47And that servant who knew his master’s
will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe
beating. 48But the one who did not know, and did
what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much
was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted
much, they will demand the more. (ESV)
A disciple
knows how to interpret the present time.
54He also said to the
crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is
coming.’ And so it happens. 55And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will
be scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of
earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Luke 9
Luke 9
A disciple denies himself and takes up his cross
daily to follow Jesus and is never of Christ or His Gospel.
23And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross
daily and follow me. 24For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever
loses his life for my sake will save it. 25For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and
loses or forfeits himself? 26For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the
Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father
and of the holy angels. (ESV)
A
disciple lets nothing hold him back from following Christ.
57As they were going
along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58And Jesus said to him,“Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has
nowhere to lay his head.” 59To another he said,“Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my
father.” 60And Jesussaid to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim
the kingdom of God.” 61Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first
say farewell to those at my home.” 62Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit
for the kingdom of God.” (ESV)
