Romans 13
Romans 13
A disciple respects authority.
1Every person is to
be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except
from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2Therefore whoever
resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed
will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3For rulers are not
a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of
authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; 4for it is a minister
of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not
bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings
wrath on the one who practices evil. 5Therefore it is
necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for
conscience’ sake. 6For because of this
you also pay taxes, for rulers are
servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. 7Render to all what
is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom
to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. (NASB)
A disciple loves
others.
8Owe nothing to
anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. 9For this, “YOU
SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU
SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU
SHALL NOT COVET,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in
this saying, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 10Love does no wrong
to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. (NASB)
A disciple lays
aside the deeds of darkness and puts on the armor of light. A disciple behaves properly and isn’t
involved in carousing, drunkenness, sexual promiscuity, sensuality, strife, and
jealousy instead he puts on Christ and makes no provision for the lust of the
flesh.
11Do this,
knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for
now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. 12The night is almost
gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and
put on the armor of light. 13Let us behave
properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual
promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 14But put on the Lord
Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. (NASB)

Romans 12
Romans 12
A disciple presents his body to God as a living
sacrifice and does not conform to this world.
1I appeal to you
therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may
discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)
A disciple doesn’t think highly of himself and uses
the gifts given to him by God to bring glory to God.
3For by the grace
given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly
than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the
measure of faith that God has assigned. 4For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually
members one of another. 6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,
let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his
teaching; 8the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who
contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one
who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. (ESV)
A disciple’s love
is genuine. He abhors evil and holds
fast to what is good. He loves others
and shows honor to others. He is fervent
in serving the Lord. He rejoices in
hope, patient in tribulation, and prays constantly. He contributes to the needs of others and
shows hospitality.
9Let love be
genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another
in showing honor. 11Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in
prayer. 13Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show
hospitality. (ESV)
A disciple loves
his enemies and lives in harmony with others.
He is humble and lives in peace with others and doesn’t seek vengeance. A disciple overcomes evil with good.
14Bless those who
persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but
associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own
sight.17Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is
honorable in the sight of all. 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with
all. 19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave itto
the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the
Lord.” 20To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is
thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning
coals on his head.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
(ESV)
