    1 Corinthians 10:14

14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

The Corinthians lived in a pagan society were idol worship was everywhere.  It aint as common in our society to see actual idols.  By that I mean the little wooden or stone figures shaped like gods or animals but we do have idols of different types.  An idol is anything we put before God.  It can be money, sex, power, fame, etc.  If it is more important to you than God it is a idol.  If you would rather spend time with it then God it is a idol.

    1 Corinthians 10:13

13There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

In another part of the Bible Paul explains how people are a slave to sin.  If you ever been around a drug addict you know what it means for a person to be a slave of sin.  The drugs take over their lives.  Everything centers around getting their next high.  They will sell their own kids to get that high.

Well God provided a way to break the grips of sin, the blood of Christ.  Christ is our escape from the grip of sin and the death that comes with it rather it be drugs, alcohol, pornography, sexual immorality, whatever has taken over your life, Jesus is the escape.

    1 Corinthians 10:6-12

6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

7Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

9Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

10Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

11Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

12Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

The history of Israel is a sad history of rebellion.  They constantly rebelled against God and received the punishment of their rebellion.  Don’t be fooled God does punish rebels.  Rebellion against God is the ultimate sin.  The sad state of this world is due to man’s rejection of God.  This world is doomed without acknowledging God.  You will face the wrath of God if you choose to reject him.  There is only salvation in receiving Christ as your Savior.  Christ is the only escape from the wrath of God.

    1 Corinthians 10

1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert.  (NIV)

The Hebrews were lead out of Egypt by God himself.  He divided the Red Sea, he fed them manna from Heaven, he made water flow out of rocks and they still doubted and they still rebelled against God.  And man hasn’t changed today, we still live in rebellion to God.  Man is without excuse, the witness of God’s being is all around us.  The stars and the universe, we have the Bible we have seen miraculous things and man still doubts God.  Well there is a coming day when man will be judged of his rebellion.

    1 Corinthians 9:19-23

19For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

    20And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

21To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

22To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

23And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

Paul was a Jew that was born a Roman citizen in a Roman province.  That help Paul relate to different people.  He could relate to Jew and Gentile.  He related his message to whatever group he was preaching to.  This enabled Paul to be a very effective evangelist.

To evangelize you have to relate to the group you are witnessing to within reason.  I know a preacher who was trying to witness to a guy who owned a tattoo parlor so to reach out to him he and his wife came in and got tattoos.  That is probably too far.  We wont to relate to them not join them.  We want them to join us.  You see a lot of youth pastors making this mistake.  They want the kids to think they are cool so they get their ears pierced or dye their hair or other outrageous means.

Trust me man has a natural spiritual hunger.  You offer them to feed this void they will listen.  You don’t have to compromise who you are to reach out to them and I think they will respect you more.  Trust me if you are over 30 the kids aint going to think you cool no matter what you do and mostly are actualyl looking for a authority figure to lead them because most of them aint getting it at home.

Relate to people you are trying to reach on a personal level.  Sports, motorcycles, family whatever they are interested in.  Most people don’t respect phonies.  If try outrageous stunts to reach to people they are going to see right through you and draw away.

    1 Corinthians 9:18

18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make use of my rights in preaching it. (NIV)

Paul was trying to set an example.  He did not want anybody to think he was abusing his right as a preacher which as the Bible says a worker is worthy of his hire.  He didn’t want to drive anybody away by asking for money or support.  We can read later on that Paul often worked as a tentmaker to support himself.

Don’t get me wrong I have no problem whatsoever with a full time pastor being supported by his church but we also know there are people who abuse this.  A pastor should be supported so he can take care of his bills and provide for his family.  Your pastor doesn’t need several houses, several cars, a jet, a big healthy bank account.

One of these days people are going to wake and realize the only person prospering under prosperity preaching is the guy in the pulpit saying give me your money.  Look at all the great preachers in the Bible name one that was wealthy.  God never promised his believers a easy life, what He did promise was that during the tough times He would be with us.

16 Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! (NIV)

Paul was called to preach he couldn’t deny it.  He couldn’t turn his back on God.  What gift do you have?  Are you using it for God?  According to the Bible all believers are given a gift to use in the spreading of the Gospel.

    1 Corinthians 6:19,20

19What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's

In the days of Paul temples was a common thing.  It was the center of worship for most religions.  The Jews had the temple at Jerusalem.  The Greeks and Romans all had temples for their gods.  Today we worship in churches instead of temples.  The church is a place to meet as worshippers, it is not considered the dwelling place of God.

Paul says the temple, or dwelling place of the Holy Spirit is us, the believers, therefore we are to keep it holy and pure.  Remember Jesus clearing out the temple in Jerusalem because the Jews had defiled it.

Different people have different ideas what it means to keep our temples clean but I guarantee we should keep the things of the world out.

I remember a saying by Billy Graham.

“The proper place for a boat is in the sea, the proper place for the sea is not in the boat”.

In other words the proper place for the believer is in the world, the proper place for the world is not in the Christian.

Who is your master?  Or are you a slave to sin or you a child of the living God?  There is only two real choices in this world, serve God and live for eternity or reject God and spend eternity in hell.

    1 Corinthians 6:9-11

1 Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God ? Do not be deceived ; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. (NASB)

It isn’t very popular today to talk about sin.  It is defiantly not popular to say a homosexual is a sinner.  It is not popular to say someone is going to hell.

But our standard is God’s word.  What society values doesn’t matter to God.  We will not be judged by society’s standard.  We will be judged by the Word of God.

    1 Corinthians 5:9-13

9 I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.”b]"> (NIV)

In these verses Paul is continuing to tell the Corinth church to expel the member who has been sleeping with his step-mother.  He is telling them not to associate with him.

We have to socialize with unbelievers outside the church.  We work with them, we go to school with them, we witness to them but we don’t partake of their immoral lifestyle.  But Paul is saying for those inside the church who refuse to repent need to be removed from the church.  Don’t let a member disrupt the witness of the church by his behavior.  By not confronting him you are silently condoning his actions.

    1 Corinthians:1-8

    1 Corinthians 5

1It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

2And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

3For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

4In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

5To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

6Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

7Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Paul is dealing with church discipline in these verses.  A member of the Corinth church was having a sexual relationship with his step-mother and the church leadership had not confronted the man about the relationship.  It was obviously well known if Paul had heard about it from a distance.  Paul was telling the church to confront the man evening pit him out of the church.  A lot of people have a problem with the phrase hand him over to Satan but what Paul was saying the man was already living in sin don’t let him do it in the church.  Rebuke him, confront him if he refuses to repent then his heart isn’t with God anyway.

The church represents God.  We are to ambassadors of God in the community.  The church has to be holy and pure.  Don’t misunderstand what I say.  The church should always be open to sinners to find God and repentance.  If we turn people away because of who they are or what they have done we will never fulfill the Great Commission.  We will be constantly looking down on others.  And even church members who sin should be given a chance to repent without judgmental scorn of others and we all know it happens.  One charge that always gets thrown at the church is that we are judgmental and hypocrites and the charge is sometimes right.  Unfortunaly we have members that can’t get past the mistakes of others forgetting their own transgressions.

These verses are talking about a member who is living openly in sin and refuses to repent of his sin.  Paul is saying don’t let this sin corrupt the rest of the church.

    1 Corinthians 4:8-13

8 Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you! 9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10 We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. 12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment. (NIV)

Our standard for judging everything is the Word of God.  Look how Paul describes his life and the life of the other Apostles.  Look at all the hardships they went through.  Look at the life that Jesus lived.  It wasn’t a life of luxury and wealth.  He lived poor among the people.

Now look at some of our modern day leaders.  I aint saying they should live in rags and shacks but you really have to question a leader that lives wealthy and preaches prosperity when so many around the world live in poverty.

Our standard as believers is the Word of God.  We can’t live our lives worrying what others might think.  They mocked the prophets, they mocked Jesus, they mocked the disciples, they mocked Paul, they mock God himself why should we be different?  God is our judge not the world.

    1 Corinthians 3:16,17

16Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

17If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

In the Old Testament and up to the time the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem the temple in Jerusalem was considered to be the temple of God.  It was the place the priests offered sacrifice for the sins of Israel.

Well Christ became the sacrifice for all of mankind on the cross.  His sacrifice did away with the need of animal sacrifices and the need for priests since he became our heavenly high priest.  He and he alone is the one and only access to the Father.

The temple of God today is the body of Christ which is his church.  We all together are the temple of God.  As the temple of God we are to be holy because God is a holy God.  We are expected to live a holy life before God.  Remember Christ clearing out the temple in Jerusalem, we are to clear out our temple of anything unclean; hate, angry, disbelief, bitterness, lust, greed, anything not clean before God.

1 Corinthians 3:1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere men? (NIV)

Paul was telling the Corinthians that they were still babes in Christ.  That they needed to mature.  Today we have so many people that accept Christ as their Savior but never move past the basic understanding of Christ and Christian principles.

We are commanded to grow in our relationship with God.  It is a commandment.  Paul says later on to study to show yourself approved.  We grow through prayer and Bible Study.

    1 Corinthians 2:1-5

1 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.a]">[a] 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. (NIV)

Paul was a scholar but he came to the Corinth Church with the simple message of the cross.  Billy Graham preached for roughly 60 years and in those years he preached one message over and over again, salvation in Christ.

Study is great we should always study but the message of the cross is simple.  Christ died on the cross for us that while we were yet sinners worthy of death we could have salvation through his sacrifice on the cross.  He is the one and only Way to heaven.  If your church doesn’t preach that find another that does.

    1 Corinthians 1:18-31

18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. 19 As the Scriptures say,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”
    [e]

20 So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. 21 Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. 22 It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. 23 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.

24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles,[f] Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.

26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy[g] when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world,[h] things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”[i] (NLT)

Why do so many people look away from God for answers to the world’s problem?  That is what has created the mess this world is in in the first place, rejection of God and his statues.  Adam and Eve listen to Satan instead of God.  The Jews thought the nations around them had the answer.  The Pharisees thought they had the answer.  Mankind today has rejected God and has tried to come with its own answers.  We write off the Genesis story as fantasy and replace it with the fantasy of the Big Bang Theory.  We deny God as the created and create the fantasy of evolution.  We deny the statues of God and try to replace them with our own.  We long for spiritual belonging and turn to self help gurus who get rich off of the naïve.

What has all of this gotten us?  A world spinning out of control.  A world where nations war against one another.  A world where thousands die of starvation while celebrities are paid millions and pastors preach prosperity from the pulpit.  A world where we kill babies in the name of freedom because we don’t want the consequences of un-protective sex.  A world in which we say sexual perversion is freedom while we mock those who hold onto traditional values.  A world that mocks those who preach the Word of God but will pray $10,000 to be spiritual warriors.  And we mock God, seriously?  You want to be a spiritual warrior look me up.  I will teach you for free.  I got the book that shows me the way right here.  There is a spiritual battle raging all around us if you want to be a spiritual warrior.

If you don’t know what I am talking about look up the story about the people who died in the sweat lounge in AZ learning how to be spiritual warriors for $10,000.

Only God has the answers to the world’s problem, if we would only turn to him and accept his Way.

    1 Corinthians 1:10-17

    1 Corinthians 1

10Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

11For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

12Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

     14I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

15Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

16And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Paul was preaching to the Corinthians about divisions that were forming in the Corinth Church.  There were also divisions that were forming in the early church as a whole.  The Christian Church today is still divided along denominational lines.  Division is not good.  It could be a end to a local church.

I myself have seen churches fall apart with in-fighting.  It usually starts with one trouble maker who is able to gather a group around them and before long they are tearing the church apart and I tell you right now it is the work of Satan.  God doesn’t tear churches apart Satan does.

In this case I was new to this church but the church had decided to build a new church.  A small group wasn’t happy with the church board’s plan and started trouble.  They were grouped around one woman who was straight up a trouble maker.  They threaten to leave if the church went ahead with their plans.  Well the church board didn’t back down so the group left.  During this time attendance at the church dropped as people starting going to church elsewhere including me.  Like I said I was new and once I seen what was going on I went elsewhere.  In the end the new building was never built and the church barley survived with maybe a dozen members showing up for church.  Like I said God doesn’t tear apart churches, Satan does.

12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Jews considered themselves and only themselves the children of God.  They thought since they were the children of God their salvation was secured through their birth as Jews.  Most of us are considered Gentiles, non-Jews, not the children of God.  In the eyes of the Jews the Gentiles were considered unclean.  Any respectable Jew would have nothing to do with a Gentile.  John is showing here that all who receive Christ are the children of God.

10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

The Jews had been waiting for the Messiah and knew the scriptures that prophesied of the Messiah but yet they either refuse to recognize him or failed to recognize him either way they missed the boat.  So many people today are still missing the boat because either they refuse to recognize him or just don’t recognize him either way the results are the same.  Christ is the way to heaven.  Without Christ the alternative is hell.  There is no salvation outside of Christ.

    The Solid Foundation

    The Solid Foundation

Matthew 7: 24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

28And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

29For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Our foundation is the Word of God anything else is built on sand.  So many churches today have foundations built on the sand of political correctness, new age beliefs, and liberal theology.  But I tell you if it aint built on the Word of God it will all crumble.

22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

We know that not everyone who claims to be a Christian is a Christian and we know that not everyone who claims to be a preacher is truly a preacher.  You never hear me claim to be Super Christian.  I have my faults, my weaknesses, I am tempted to sin and everyone else is the same.  I am talking about those living a lie.  Those that teach falsehood for profit, those that teach falsehood because they don’t have a spine bone to stand up against social pressure, those that want to be like instead of preach the truth.  Read some of the surveys by Pew Forum sometime you will be shocked by the number of pastors that don’t believe Jesus was the divine Son of God, or don’t believe in judgment, or believe that Jesus isn’t the only Way to heaven or don’t believe in God at all, which I can’t understand why someone is in the pulpit if they don’t believe in God.  Well you might fool your neighbors and friends but you don’t fool God.  It says it right here if you don’t know God you will not in heaven.

    False Teachers

    False Teachers

Matthew 7: 15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

We know there are false teachers out there.  I get upset every time I turn on a so called “Christian Channel” most of the time they air a slick willy begging for money.  The Bible says we will know them by their fruits.  The focus of any church should be to bring the lost to salvation and discipleship of the believers.  If any preacher’s message is ALWAYS a feel good message about love, happiness, blessings, prosperity without ever touching on repentance, salvation, judgment, or sin, you know the hard subjects no one likes to talk about, then he is probably only interested in attracting new members and their wallets instead of truly preaching the Gospel of Christ.

    The Narrow Gate

    The Narrow Gate

Matthew 7:13"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.

14"For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. (NASB)

The majority of the world is on the broad way to hell.  The majority of the world is living in rebellion to God.  The majority of the world refuses to submit to the will of God.  Don’t be one of these.  Be one of the few that follows the narrow path to God.
