2 John
2 John
A disciple walks in the truth, he loves others, obeys
the commandments of God, and he abides in the teachings of Christ.
4I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth,
just as we were commanded by the Father. 5And now I
ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the
one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6And this
is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment,
just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 7For many
deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of
Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8Watch
yourselves, so that you may not lose what wehave worked for, but may win a full reward. 9Everyone
who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have
God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone
comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your
house or give him any greeting, 11for
whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works. (ESV)

1 John 4
1 John 4
A disciple doesn’t just follow anyone he tests the
spirits to see if they are of God.
1Beloved, do not
believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God,
for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that
confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.
This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in
the world already. 4Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for
he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world,
and the world listens to them. 6We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is
not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the
spirit of error. (ESV)
A disciple loves
others.
7Beloved, let us
love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God
and knows God.8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is
love. 9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God
sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved
us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one
another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides
in us and his love is perfected in us. (ESV)
A disciple
confesses Jesus is the Son of God and he loves God and others.
13By this we know
that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son
to be the Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in
him, and he in God. 16So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has
for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides
in him. 17By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have
confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this
world. 18There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.
For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in
love. 19We love because he first loved us. 20If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a
liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannotlove
God whom he has not seen. 21And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must
also love his brother. (ESV)

1 John 3
1 John 3
A disciple keeps himself pure before God.
1See what kind of
love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and
so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know
him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has
not yet appeared; but we know that when he appearswe shall be like him, because we shall see
him as he is. 3And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is
pure. (ESV)
A disciple does not
practice sin instead he practices righteousness.
4Everyone who makes
a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in
him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps
on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices
righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the
devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared
was to destroy the works of the devil. 9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’sseed
abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who
are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not
of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. (ESV)
A disciple loves
others.
11For this is the message that you have heard from the
beginning, that we should love one another. 12We should not be like Cain, who
was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him?
Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13Do
not be surprised, brothers,that
the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed out
of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides
in death. 15Everyone
who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal
life abiding in him.
16By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us,
and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17But
if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his
heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18Little
children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (ESV)
A disciple keeps obeys God and
does what pleases Him. He believes in
the name of Christ and loves others.
19By this we shall
know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our
heart, and he knows everything. 21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence
before God; 22and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his
commandments and do what pleases him.23And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of
his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and Godin him. And by this we know that he
abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

1 John 2
1 John 2
A disciple obeys God, keeps His commandments, and
walks in the same manner as Christ.
1My little children,
I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does
sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only
but also for the sins of the whole world. 3And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep
his commandments. 4Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments
is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is
perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way
in which he walked. (ESV)
A disciple loves
others.
7Beloved, I am
writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the
beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing
to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light
is already shining. 9Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is
still in darkness. 10Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in himthere
is no cause for stumbling. 11But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in
the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has
blinded his eyes. (ESV)
A disciple does not
love the things of the world instead he does the will of God.
15Do not love the
world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the
Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the
desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the
Father but is from the world. 17And the world is passing away along with its desires, but
whoever does the will of God abides forever. (ESV)
A disciple abides
in Christ and practices righteousness.
27But the anointing
that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone
should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is
true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him. 28And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he
appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that
everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. (ESV)

2 Peter 1
2 Peter 1
A disciple possesses faith, virtue, knowledge,
self-control, godliness, love, and he is steadfast.
3His divine power
has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him who called us tohis own glory and excellence, 4by which he has granted to us his precious and very great
promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature,
having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful
desire. 5For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your
faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with
steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly
affection with love. 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from
being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he
is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and
election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11For in this way there will be richly provided for you an
entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 5
1 Peter 5
A disciple respects his elders and humbles himself
before God.
5Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders.
Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God
opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6Humble
yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time
he may exalt you, (ESV)
A
disciple casts his anxieties onto God to take care of.
7casting all your
anxieties on him, because he cares for you. (ESV)
A disciple
is sober-minded and watchful. A disciple
resists the devil and stands firm in his faith.
8Be sober-minded; be
watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking
someone to devour. 9Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds
of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10And after
you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to
his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and
establish you. 11To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (ESV)

1 Peter 4
1 Peter 4
A disciple lives to do the will of God.
1Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm
yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh
has ceased from sin, 2so as to live for the rest of the time in the
flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 3For the time that is past suffices for doing
what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness,
orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4With respect to this they are surprised when
you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5but they will give account to him who is
ready to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is why the gospel was preached even
to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they
might live in the spirit the way God does. (ESV)
A disciple is
self-controlled, sober-minded, he loves others, he shows hospitality without
grumbling, and uses his gifts to serve God and others.
7The end of all things is at hand; therefore
be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8Above all, keep loving one another earnestly,
since love covers a multitude of sins. 9Show hospitality to one another without
grumbling.10As
each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of
God’s varied grace: 11whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of
God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in
order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him
belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (ESV)
A disciple rejoices
and gives glory to God when he faces trials for his faith
12Beloved, do
not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as
though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings,
that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are
blessed, because the Spirit of gloryand
of God rests upon you. 15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an
evildoer or as a meddler. 16Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be
ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. 17For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of
God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not
obey the gospel of God? 18And
“If the righteous
is scarcely saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
19Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will
entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. (ESV)

1 Peter 3
1 Peter 3
A disciple honors their spouse.
1Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that
even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the
conduct of their wives, 2when
they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3Do
not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of
gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4but
let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable
beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5For this is
how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to
their own husbands, 6as
Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do
good and do not fear anything that is frightening. 7Likewise,
husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the
woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with youof the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be
hindered. (ESV)
A disciple has unity of mind,
sympathy, love, a tender heart and a humble mind. He does not repay evil for evil instead he
blesses others.
8Finally, all of
you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble
mind. 9Do not
repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for
to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing (ESV)
A disciple
keeps his tongue from evil and deceit, he turns from evil and does good, and he
seeks peace.
10For
“Whoever desires
to love life
and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from speaking deceit;
11let him turn
away from evil and do good;
let him seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes
of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do
evil.” (ESV)
A disciple
honors Christ and is prepared to make a defense for the reason for his hope in
Christ with gentleness and respect.
13Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what
is good? 14But even if
you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of
them, nor be troubled, 15but
in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a
defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do
it with gentleness and respect, 16having
a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good
behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17For
it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for
doing evil. 18For
Christ also suffered once for
sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being
put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19in whichhe went and proclaimed to
the spirits in prison, (ESV)

1 Peter 2
1 Peter 2
A disciple puts aside malice, deceit, hypocrisy,
envy, and slander and seeks the pure milk of the Word of God.
1Therefore, putting
aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2like newborn
babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in
respect to salvation, 3if you have tasted
the kindness of the Lord. (NASB)
A disciple abstains
from fleshly lusts,
11Beloved, I urge you
as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against
the soul. 12Keep your behavior excellent
among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as
evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
(NASB)
A disciple submits
to those in authority, he does what is right, he honors all people, he loves
others, and fears God.
13Submit yourselves
for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in
authority, 14or to governors as
sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do
right. 15For such is the
will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. 16Act as
free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God. 17Honor all people,
love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king. (NASB)
A disciple dies to
sin and lives in righteousness.
21For you have been
called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an
example for you to follow in His steps, 22WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; 23and while being
reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats,
but kept entrusting Himself to
Him who judges righteously; 24and He Himself bore
our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to
righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25For you were
continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and
Guardian of your souls. (NASB)
